@Aqizzar: what do you mean, precisely, by "philosophical music?"  Are you talking about the lyrics, or the structure of the song itself?

Either or.  It's a pretty open ended theme.  Just imagine you were transported back to Corinth circa 400BC, with the world's largest iPod and a Lord Kelvin understanding of building stereo equipment.  What songs would you play to raise some guardians for the Socratian city in the sky?

Hm.

Most obvious song ever, perhaps, but Ride of the Valkyries is top of my list.  More later if I can find anything.

Do listen to: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7161637 Military Metal.

Don't listen to: Anything by Megadeth (most of it is anti-THE-MAN) except "Crush 'Em" or the following Metallica songs: For Whom the Bell Tolls, One and Ride the Lightning. Two are about military problems, and the third's about being executed.

Edit: As a secondary thought, to get them pumped up, tape headphones in their ears and make them listen to "Thunderhorse" by Dethklok. ^_^

Holy crap, why did I not start watching One Punch Man earlier? This is the best thing.

Recently I have abandoned most of the music I thought I liked after realising what superficial drivel it is, and am now massively into Blues and Soul.  A few artists that got me into the genres:

John Lee Hooker (No words...so...cool...)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (Pride and Joy = Most awesome guitar intro ever?)
Howlin' Wolf (Made me pick up a harmonica - and that voice!)
Screamin' Jay Hawkins (Awesome Lyrics and Foot Tappin', head noddin' goodness)
Raul Midon (Latin Soul with Poppy undertones, some great chill out music.  Plus his blindness makes his talent all the more impressive)
Aretha Franklin (Today I sing the blues is one of the most awesomely melancholy melodies I've ever heard)

It's the first time I've ever been inspired enough to pick up a musical instrument.  So now my Fortresses swing to the dulcet tones of a blues harmonica (Or at least they will when I can figure out how to bend notes.  :-\).

I don't really prefer any type of music. I do tend to like classical and rock more though. It depends on how good it is really.

Seconded. I love melodic acoustic strings... and coupled with sax lands them precisely in my alley.

Good a time as any to share Frigg.

Like my friend, I approve of Deadmau5, even though half his stuff consists of bullcrap trance.

I've been trying to understand Merzbow, but the whole genre of noise is incredibly hard to even understand or accept as music.
I'd still rather listen to the incoherent howls of tortured electricity and the clicks and buzzing of seriously abused synthesizers than Katy Perry.

On a lighter note, I borrowed a load of old jazz cassette tapes from a friend, and I'm sticking all of them on my computer then burning them to disc. There are loads of rare live performances on some of them, but it's a mammoth task.

I ask for musical assistance once more, this time it's a bit more exotic, mainly something similar to this, one of the best series and one with great music in my opinion, i only wish for a fifth season, also to find something similar :)
