Aye, the bassoon is awesome. There was a time when I couldn't stop humming that part.

(Excepting those few pieces written to be disliked.)
My orchestra actually played this (and Linconshire Posey) at Carnegie Hall in New York

Damn, I'm jealous. I've played Lincolnshire Posy myself a few years back, though never in any notable concert hall. Ives is good too; I'm listening to it right now. He writes such neat music. It always sounds so messy and confused, but it's still such carefully composed stuff. I've got a recording of him playing and 'singing' They Are There!. It's hilarious. The dude can't sing to save his life, and yet there he goes ... anyway. Grainger makes me wish that there's more good quality wind orchestra in the world.

For my own tastes, I like French composers; Ravel, Debussy and other modern French dudes are up there on the list, but I've grown to like French Baroque music as well, which is a bit of a pain because it's infrequently performed and recorded. Lully's motets, and the early French opera is wonderful, and so different from later opera, which I'm not so fond of. Also, I'm on a Shostakovich bender. Got his 15 symphonies on my pocket jukebox, each different from the rest, all terrific in their own way. I recommend that you try him if you like other Russian guys, though ol' Shosty does take a little getting used to. Finally, contemporary American composers are great too. Philip Glass and the other minimalists, John Adams (his music appears in Civ 4! I had a good laugh when I recognized his music) writes good orchestral and piano music, and the late needs-more-love Alan Hovhaness. He was one of few recent composers who managed to make a living doing nothing but composing, and he consequently had a massive output.

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Think I'm addicted to the Irish fiddle and bagpipes. Currently I've been doing most of my listening through youtube, but it's rather unreliable due to the terrible connection we have here in the land of milk and honey. Youtube isn't portable either, so my question is, do they record mp3s of Irish music? And if they do, should I look for anyone specific? (Irish fiddle music is a bit ambiguous, and I think google is a wee bit allergic to ambiguousness >_>)

You can easily rip Youtube videos and convert them to MP3's with this program.

I think I remember Boys of the Lough being a good band.  You can probably find some more good stuff from there.

I've recently learned I love jazz, oh and swing, but most of my listening is confined to a single shoutcast station. Are there any artists out there you guys recommend?

Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, and Lionel Hampton are good jazz musicians.

Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Black Sabbath, KISS, CCR, White Stripes, Iron Maiden, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Mötley Crüe, Guns n' Roses, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, Judas Priest, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Doors, Nick Cave, Scorpions, The Offspring, Danzig, Sex Pistols, Hanoi Rocks, Uriah Heep, Bob Marley, Metallica (to some extent), Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Dio, Muddy Waters, Kansas, J. J. Cale...

Any genres represented above. I dislike new rock.

I also listen to pretty much everything else (excluding country, and most rap) every once in a while.

Funk cheers me up, with it's basslines.
