I've set the entire map to 'calm', no savagery, no good, no evil. Still, all I get is dwarves.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Elves are [GOOD], goblins are [EVIL].

Goblins need evil mountains, elves don't really need good forests, but they will live in them. I'm pretty sure elves don't mind savagery either.

Problem found, thanks to another thread...it was the caves. Turns out, 500 caves kill civilisations rather quickly.

I've found humans live in evil biomes.

... this is only when they've conquered a goblin fort, though.

I'm curious, how did you find that out?  (Or post links to that other thread.)

In some thread, someone mentioned that Bronze Colossi can kill civilisations.
In another thread, someone mentioned that caves spawn megabeasts.

Somehow, after a lot of not thinking, my mind stumbled across the missing links in there and my hand, full of shame, clicked away the "500" after the "caves" until it was a mere "24".

Ah, yes, I do remember saying that Bronze Collossi can wipe out civs single-handedly thanks to their newfound nigh-invincibility, but I thought you said the problem was that civilizations were never placed to begin with, not that they weren't surviving the full process of worldgen.

Yea...well...my mistake on that one. I stopped world gen at year 5 rather than straight away. In nine out of ten gens, that gave the BCs ample time to trash most if not all non-dwarven civs. I didn't really expect that.
