NDS Games
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:41:51 am »

No, don't have a DS, but I do have an emulator. Do you guys/gals recommend any games for it?

So far I have been playing at work:
Animal Crossing (booooooooring so happy I can play at twice the speed)
Atelier Annie (Someone mentioned it in the RacetTear thread, it's alright)
Scribblenauts (Some levels are fun.)
Pokemon something (Bleh, kind of tired of pokemon games since the GBA days.)
Infinite Space (totally RPS, something I hate. But damn, it's so flashy)

And I have these on the waiting list:
M&M: Clash of Heroes
Phantasy Star Zero
Sands of Destruction
Super Robot Taisen
A Witch's Tale

So, Any recommendations or any comments on the games I picked to play and to play next?

An emulator? GASP.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who gets away with playing DS games at work though.

The DS Zelda games are pretty entertaining, The World Ends With You is a must, New Super Mario Bros, Valkyrie Profile...Front Mission and Chrono Trigger are also incredible games, but they're both SNES ports so if you're using a DS emulator to begin with there's not much point...

Thanks, I've already played Front Mission & Chrono Trigger back when they were new, so no much point either way. I saw the zelda one but was kind of meh, I haven't liked zelda at all after the first SNES one, it died for me after that one (Link to the past, I think?). I saw the world ends with you as well but didn't decide on getting it, I guess I will go look at it again.

Is the new super mario a platformer or is it like tennis or something stupid like that? And valkyrie profile, is it like the PS2 one? If so, I already played it. xD

The various Advance Wars are pretty good. Likewise the Castlevania's are also nice.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

The castlevania games are nice, but although people tell me they enjoyed the advance war games, I really haven't. Puzzle quest was fun, but it almost seems luck dependent, and although it's addictive it gets repetitive, with the last boss turning into a luck based fight. The Rune factory games are nice if you can put up with the mindless grinding required, although I like pretending that exterminating caves of monsters is part of my daily routine. Mario & Luigi, Bowser's inside story is a very fun game that I want to pick up again, now that I'm talking about it. That's everything off the top of my head, and I really haven't been paying the DS that much attention anymore.

Heh, yeah, I played Front Mission and Chrono Trigger back in the day on emulator. I bought them when they were re-released because they are just that great.

The World Ends With You is unique and amazingly fun, although it uses the touchscreen quite heavily and the mic a bit so it might not translate to emulator very well. Still, it's probably my favourite RPG released in the last 5 years, so yeah. NSMB is a platformer in classic form, similar to Mario 3 or Mario World. Basically it lives up to the expectations for a Mario platformer game, which is to say it's great. The Valkyrie Profile game is a (indirect) sequel to the PS2 one, it's sort of a small-scale tactics RPG. Not mind-blowing but certainly fun, and surprisingly dark.

I'm not in a good position to critique the Zelda games because I'm a bit of a Zelda fanboy. They're sort of simple and aimed at a younger audience, but I fucking eat them up anyway.

I'd suggest Yoshi's Island DS but there's an emulation issue with it. Still, awesome game that I am glad I actually bought as it's an expanded remake of the original Yoshi's Island.

I searched on youtube (and I have to ... wake up... to go to work soon, so I should stop this) and found SMT: Strange journey reminded me of sega's shadowrun. I drooled a bit and it's my next game in line.

The Phoenix Wright games are good on an emulator except for the music which will play slowly if your computer isn't fast.

Is that the game where you play an attorney and when I heard of it I laughed thinking of this?

(must add those to my random sig)

On unrelated news:
Bleach 259, tentacle monsters and a robot with a huge phallic cannon wielding a vampire katana.

Well yeah, as a matter of fact it's more serious than Harvey Birdman but it's still a very silly game.

Man, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was great. That's one show that should never ever have stopped. I'm getting the phoenix game too.

I'm going to play Ace Attorney thinking to myself ..ooOO(We're going to need some law books. With pictures this time. )

Ace Attorney is generally a very silly game but some of those cases are really dramatic and emotional.  I admit to tearing up when I beat case 4 in the third game, that was so sad oh my god.

Only game I play on the DS anymore is Picross 3D.

Maybe once Super Scribblenauts comes out, that'll be worth playing (mostly since that will allow you to actually use the d-pad to move rather than use the buggy stylus-based movement).

Rune Factory 2 is alright, basically fantasy Harvest Moon with somewhat worse "physics" and average combat.

Don't think the Advance Wars series have changed much since the GBA ones, so that should be ok as well.
