HFS
« on: July 25, 2010, 08:55:23 pm »

I've just recently started in with DF again and just had a quick question about the HFS. In 40d# you could tell where the HFS was on the embark map, but now I can't figure out how to make them appear. Is there a way to make them visible or do you just have to hope and get lucky?

EVERY SINGLE SITE!
EVERY
SINGLE
SITE
SOMETIMES EVEN TWICE IN ONE SITE!
Actually, this is really weird now that I think about it. Why would the best material ever be so common?

Set it up in advance, then. A sealed chamber with one miner and a chained goat, and all the infrastructure needed to crush anything that enters it sitting right above it. Se the miner to start digging down through the spike, and once he breaches it he'll die, and the clowns will pour up to kill the goat. Once they all get in there, crush them.

The downside is that

There's still only one structure-of-evil-containing-secret-upright-whatsit per travel map tile, right, though?

Oh, and I don't know about offical map sizes, but my 1x2 embark area dosen't actually connect to hell. I don't remember if there's any foometal, I saw a totally absurd like 30+ level floor of solid SMR below my magma in stonesense...

Probably for the best, I'm still struggling with goblin ambushers :D.

If I remember correctly, there is one small HFS tile every 2x2 region, so you are guaranteed small HFS if you make your map 3x3. Anything smaller than that, and there is a chance you won't get any.

Because, as you noted, everyone who tries to get at it gets murdered and eaten by demons.

The old HFS 1 per region square, is replaced with a new HFS, but you can't search for it from the embark map.  The old, check your z-status screen for pre-existing wealth trick still works if you want to know if you actually embarked on it.
On thing about that though,

Then the pretty blue stuff was taken out of the HFS and added so every 3x3 is pretty much guaranteed to have at least one.  I've seen multiple several times in 4x4 embarks.  You still gotta be careful about digging too deep and too greedily.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Do we really need to spoil any of this? The thread is called HFS, after all. Anyone who's trying to go without spoilers wouldn't look in here.
