Possible Pandora port?

Is it possible that Dwarf Fortress could be ported so it could run on the Pandora handheld?

Extremely doubtful. The CPU on that thing is pathetic. A fortress with about 20 dwarfs and nothing else would probably run close to single digit fps. Not to mention the probable lack of a large amount of memory. I don't know about you, but my worlds usually end up close to a gig by the time world gen is done.

Since it runs a Linux OS I imagine the Linux version of DF might run on it.

But this question has been asked before. Two years ago, with no answer then either.

See http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=25776

The general consensus is 'no'. For further discussion see Foot's notes in http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=26919

Playing DF on a crackerjack prize processor with 256mb of RAM sounds horrible and thankfully will never happen.

Lol, and I thought you were asking for a pandora map of avatar to be implemented in the game.

How slim could DF get if it were ever optimized?

For the sake of question, as it is right now.

I don't believe its ARM processor supports the x86 instruction set.

That's probably more likely.

By comparison: my old netbook, an EeePC 701, with a 900MHz CPU and 2GB DDR2-400 RAM, managed something like 20-40FPS on the title screen. I don't remember if I tried to play one of my saved fortresses (which, for a while, were synced between my computers), but if I did it probably had one of two outcomes: 1) getting bored while it loaded, or 2) getting <10 FPS with 20-30 dwarfs. I would test this, to get actual numbers, but I don't have it around at the moment, so yeah ...

The Pandora has a 600MHz CPU, and 256MB DDR-333 RAM. You'd probably get 20 FPS on the title screen, and <10 FPS on embark, because of all the swapping it would have to do to deal with the world.

Not that any of that would matter, because with a 4.3" screen, you wouldn't be able to see any of it without ruining your eyes, or a magnifying glass.

I talked to Toady a while back and he said that it might work, with a pocket world and a small fortress.

Someone would need to take a look at the OpenGL code and convert it to OpenGL ES, though.
