Because my party was so low level I just limited it to two healing items and two revives. One of my most valuable members was actually the level 39 ninetales, even though it was the lowest level. It took out the Skarmory that Hariyama was weak to, as well as absorbing the Flamethrower of Salamence, which would use Fly on Hariyama.

(I limit my item usage during battles to prevent Full Restore Cheese)

Yeah, I hate that. Personally I limit myself to one HP healing item and one status-curing item per battle (full restore counts as both), just because item spamming can get you to win anything. I watched a SoulSilver LP the other day, and the guy fought Red with a team comprised entirely of legendary pokemon, used them all horribly, died literally around five-six times per pokemon, but won through spamming max revive and full restore basically until the enemy pokemon had run out of PP on their best moves, then spent a while talking about how good he was to beat the best trainer in the game after he pulled out a win. That ain't skill, bud.

Yeah, I hate it when people think that surviving by constantly healing and reviving equals skill. No, It just means that you had the money to spend on healing items.

To prove that to a friend, I once loaded my entire bag with revives (I was a rich SoB) and took a pair of level two zigzagoons through the elite four by running my enemies out of pp.

No way. Their struggle attack should have killed you.

True. Oh yeah, and it hurts even if you miss, right? Or not.

I don't know about that, but I know that it took almost a thousand revives.

Wait, Struggle has a base power of 50. Were you bringing along Focus Band or what?

At the end of Platinum, my Torterra was 32 levels higher than everyone else. Crunch/Curse/Earthquake/Wood Hammer is awesome! He singlehandedly beat five of eight gyms.

Update 22: Darth Norman
Recap: In the last update, Big Stu revived a fossil into a trilobite through dubious means.

Rustboro City!

Guess where we’re going?

Psychic is the third best psychic-type attack, behind Dream Eater (requires target asleep) and Psycho Boost (only for Deoxys).

Oh hey look Petalburg!

I have come to the conclusion that he is somehow on beer. Or drugs. Either one.

So, the interior of the gym consists of rooms leading to the Leader. I’m not going to fight them all, because that would take up too much time.

For people on speed!

We’ll see…

Not a good matchup…

Attacking first isn’t an advantage when your attacks do all of five damage.

One of those Wing Attacks was critical…

What if the sign is confusing us? What if this isn’t the confusion room?

What’s with all the Cooltrainers?

Spinda like to confuse others with Teeter Dance, so…

Own Tempo prevents confusion!

The Spinda tried to use Teeter Dance three times in a row!

Indeed…

A Zangoose! This one tends to attack with high power moves.

Your Slash FAILS!

Weak!

Goddamnit, I hate these signs.

FOUR BADGES, HAPPY NOW?

Will you hurry up?!

What if my best is better than your best?

Actually, Norman is one of the harder gym leaders. Normal only has one weakness, Fighting, and he actually uses some semblance of tactics in battle.

I hate Spinda!

Why do Spinda know Psybeam?

OH MY GOD A GIANT APE AHHHH!!

Tactics, tactics.

Slaking’s ability, Truant, prevents it from moving every other turn. If it didn’t have this ability, it would unbalance the game, as Slaking has stats outclassing most legendaries.

Repeat this screen about fifty times for a summary of the battle!

Still, Slaking manage to counter several Double Take Downs, mannnnn!

Racoon>Sloth

Also, Racoon>Other Racoon

Well, you had better start believing it then!

Yes, that constitutes a loss.

BADGE!

I don’t HAVE Surf. Stop rubbing it in!

And no, that isn’t Surf. Stop trying to fool me!

AHHH! HOW DID YOU GET IN HERE?!?

AHHH! HOW DID WE GET TO HERE?!?

You know, bribes are useless if you don’t say what you want in return. But hey, Big Stu accepts bribes!

We can surf now!

I think Norman was harder in Ruby/Sapphire, when he had two slakings and a vigoroth. Those slakings were intense.

Wait, Struggle has a base power of 50. Were you bringing along Focus Band or what?
Nope, just alternating which Zigzagoon I was using. Every time one died, the other would use a Revive on it.

Nice tactic there. How long did it take to finish the E4? Also, try using a Shedinja to whittle down their PP without Revives.

Normal does less damage to Steel and Rock, while nothing to Ghost, right? Ah, forget it, I've only played Yellow, a little of Red, and Silver. Ignore me.
