I preordered from Gamer's Gate, same discount as Steam with no DRM.

Pun: Reccetear ≈ Racketeer.

Hi-score time! In my 4th playthrough of the demo (after I got the hang of dungeoneering) I finished with 31,003 pix - should be fairly beatable since my adventurer failed in his first attempt at Jade Way.

Hi-scores should probably be held until the game comes out, there's a survival mode that everyone can challenge themselves with.

It's a Mario Kart DS commercial for Japan.

I love it too, and asked him in another thread. I was so inspired I grew a moustachio meeself. I like to wax it up and curl the ends like and old-time snake oil peddler.

Why rob a bank? Have you seen the amount of gold and jewels the monsters drop? The adventurers keep most of the loot, not you.

Where do you purchase the game from again? I know you can get it on Steam, but I don't have/use Steam.
I bought from Gamer's Gate.  No DRM, no always-running client, just an installer you download.  (Or so I expect, based on previous purchase of Saira from GG.)  You'll have to do your own monitoring and updating for bugfixes.

They also have an "alert me when the price drops" option.  If you don't want to pay $18 preorder or $20 after release (or it doesn't fit your budget) you can wait maybe nine months for a price drop.

GG seem to be good guys, in the biz for the long haul.  Not fly-by-night.  I don't like their "bonus points" system, but whatever, I just ignore that.

I don't see why everyone is so afraid of the Steam version.
If the demo is any indication, the client is identical to what you can get elsewhere.
I know they said it is forced to be covered by Steam's DRM on their site, but they're paraphrasing, and they're doing it wrong.
For a game to be sold under Steamworks, it must simply be capable of being launched, installed, and version-controlled by the Steam client.  It must also support the overlay.
Overlay support is pretty much a given, so long as you're not using a draconian draw method. (Recettear does not.)
Launch support is pretty much a given, so long as you're not using a draconian boot method. (Recettear does not.)
Installation is non-existent.
Version-control is simply diffing files.  No problem.
Thus the game is on Steam.
...tl;dr...
But I suspect that, once downloaded (and played once?  Could never figure out how Steam's resource files worked) it is identical to GG's version.
Only Friday will tell, but I'm not too concerned.

E: Have a fun out of context quote from the developers.

Fair enough.

I've bought a lot through Steam.  Roughly 100 games.

I used to hate the Steamclient, now I just dislike it because it's slow.  If I want to fire up a game, the game needs to fire up the client and the client needs to connect.  In the foreground.  This is wasted time.  I am a subscriber in good standing.  Just give the game 60 seconds of grace, plz.

(The client's also too chatty and in-my-face.  While writing this post, it stole focus with a popup asking if it could restart because it updated.  Fine, whatever, if you're minimized anyway and there's no games running, just do it.  Unexpectedly taking focus is bad, and should be restricted to emergencies.  There's poor design decisions like this all over the place.)

(Ah.  Some of my problems come from me dropping my user account from Administrator to normal User, and Steam is not dealing well.)

My current thinking is, the market will be healthier if there is a reasonable amount of competition.  A market leader on the level of today's Steam is worrisome.  Healthy market means fair prices.  So I spread my money around when I can.
