A more user-friendly mod?
« on: July 23, 2010, 02:17:24 pm »

Hi there. I hope that my first post here doesn't incur any hostility if I've missed something here.

I've been looking over Dwarf Fortress, and browsing the Wiki for a while. I want to get into the game more, but the graphics are, as you probably hear all the time, confusing. Is there a mod that makes the game somewhat easier to understand? From looking on the net, I've seen a Let's Play that tells the tale of Syrupleaf, and the graphics there seem a lot easier to make out. Does anybody know where I might find this?

Thank you in advance

I recommend looking through the Ironhand and Phoebus tileset threads, and choosing the one which you like the best. Then follow the instructions. Alternatively, you could check out Mike Mayday's prepackaged graphics set.

I'm not familiar with the one from syrupleaf, it's looks vaguely like Mayday's but I'm probably wrong.

There's a listing of modified ASCII-style tilesets here:

and graphics packs here:

and a shameless plug by me for Ironhand's set here:

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm finally getting to grips with the mechanics of the game, but the 40d tileset pack I downloaded doesn't seem to have any sound. Is this intentional, or is there a way I can add it in?

Meh. I say DF should use more ASCII. More like nethack.

the music files are large, at least compared to the executable. You probably downloaded the 'small' version.

The Mayday tileset doesn't include the music file, however it is just one song played on a spanish guitar on repeat so you're not missing much.
