[Community] In the Gulf of Freckles lies Flagscar
« on: July 23, 2010, 01:42:39 pm »

The Fortification of Kissing used to represent everything it meant to be a dwarf. It had epic battles, legendary heroes, grand projects, great food, amazing booze, and even a name to confuse other races. Over the past few hundred years though, things have begun to decline. Epic battles have been replaced with political maneuvering. Instead of legendary heroes we have crooked politicians. The last grand project was a new refuse hauling location. I'll not even say what I think about the food and drink. Suffice to say, the Fortification of Kissing only inspires the other races to laugh now of days.

So I am putting together a group to set out with me to a small island called the Clear Land, in the Gulf of Freckles. We will be making our fortress on the coast known as the Hills of Appearing. Below I have included the maps of the area I have available presently for those that might be interested in joining this expedition.

Current Maps
Spoiler: Gulf of Freckles (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Hills of Appearing (click to show/hide)

NEW
Spoiler: Flagscar (click to show/hide)

Before we set sail for our new home though, I would be glad to get input on what the name of this new fortress should be. Also if anyone has any ideas on a name for our group, I am open to suggestions. For those that are curious the office of land deeds has suggested the random name “Flagscar” for the fortress, and “The Mansion of Horns” for our group. Fortress and group names have been locked in.

Sure thing, any particular one of the embark dwarfs you want to become Derm, or just one that seems right?

I would like Zan Umas as mason/mechanic; he is prone to planning great projects, fiddling with unknown levers and merely making mechanisms. Oh, and he loves to kick some ass. His nick is Dariush, and his profession is MAD GENIUS.  ;D

Make me into the most handsome dwarf

Well normally handsome is applied to males, and that leaves Goden Gusilendok. But if you are willing to be a handsome female I would say that's Thikut Tunkashez.

Also any preference on what job you get assigned with?

1st of Granite, 1051

We have arrived at the site where we will be building our fortress, and other than a couple of the dwarfs not helping as much as they should when it came to unloading the ship things are going well. As soon as Cappstv stops worrying about who is the most attractive dwarf of our group, perhaps our miners can do some scouting and find a good place to dig in and set up some lots to be made into farms.

Personally looking over the site, I'm a bit discouraged already. I knew coming here that there would be no fresh water to drink, but I had hoped one of the ponds here had been the right size to water our fields. Unfortunately, all of them are just a bit to big to completely drain on one field but to small to drain onto more than one field.

I've a plan though to tap into the ocean, as that will provide all the water we need, assuming we don't all drown from a stupid mistake.

15th of Granite 1051

It's a good thing that we brought dogs with us, as already a group of rhesus macaque have been trying to interfere with us. I haven't even ordered the unloading of our crates yet, because I know as soon as I do one of those monkeys is going to try to rob us blind. As soon as a bit more is dug out though, we'll be able to move everything inside and keep the dogs tied up at the front door.

23rd of Hematite 1051

Everything seems to be moving slowly with limited stone supply. Currently most of the future farms are being used as stockpiles while Cappstv and Zon carefully dig into the earth being careful not to kill us all. Dariush meanwhile has been creating what mechanisms he can out of the few rocks that are dug up, so we can build a safe irrigation system. Soon we'll be ready to flood the fortress, and with any luck the only parts that will be flooded will be the future farm plots. Derm is getting rather annoyed for the lack of work we are having for him, but unfortunately we just don't have enough space to store all the trees that have already been cut down.

Though in good news we got some migrants on island, that I am sure we'll find good uses for. Of note in this batch are a woodcutter, an engraver, a leather worker, and a butcher. The others while having some skill in various areas are not in areas that actually help us any time soon. It's interesting to note that the woodcutter that just arrived is more skilled at cutting down trees than Derm. I'll have to talk to talk with him to see if he wants to remain as such or if he would like to earn his way doing something else. I seem to recall when he signed for this project that he mentioned something about wanting to be part of the military. Might be a bit early for that yet, but who knows. We'll see what he has to say before I make any decisions.

Here is a quick update of what's going on with the fortress.

Spoiler: Future Water System (click to show/hide)

Here you can see seven rooms, extending from the ocean. The room with the dwarf in it is completely full of levers that will control a total of 9 flood gates, and 6 Hatches. The door near the ocean is only there at this time so that way when the breach is made into the ocean it does not fill up everything else and gives the digger time to get away. The breach will be made at a diagonal angle so that we don't have a sudden flash flood of the entire fortress. Lever 1 will control a flood gate that will allow water to flow from the breach and reach the first intersection where it will be stopped by three other flood gates. Lever 2, will control the flood gate that allows the water to continue to the next intersection where again three flood gates will control movement of the water. Lever 3 will allow the water to reach the final intersection where it will be stopped by two flood gates.

Lever 4 will control the flow of water into the first two rooms, while Lever 5 will be for the next two, and lastly lever 6 for the last two. Likewise Levers 7, 8, and 9 will control the hatches that allow the water to drain into the rooms below them.

So down a level we go.
Spoiler: Farming Level (click to show/hide)

On this level you should be able to easily identify the six rooms that will have water flowing into them. Currently five of the six rooms are being used for storage, with the sixth recently having been emptied to the seventh large room. As you can see there have been rooms dug out that will be used as future rooms for myself and whomever becomes the bookie. I've had a basic office set up for myself already so that I might better direct the expansion of the fort. Also as you can see we are all sleeping in the hall way at the moment, and the dogs we brought with us are tied up right in front of the entrance.

We actually did run out of usable stone fairly early on, but as you can see I had Cappsty and the other miner dig east and west to do a bit of searching for better rocks. Also an observant dwarf will notice the stairs down just before the western exploratory tunnel. Unfortunately the next level down has an aquifer, so we'll have to make do with what room we have right now until we get everything stabilized.

The next task in front of us, while we wait for Dariush to finish building the flood gates and floor hatches will be to dig out a few more storage rooms, so we can clear out the farms. After that we'll see about getting the workshops moved below ground, as I know some of you don't like the idea of working outside.

26th of Limestone 1051

Everyone is starting to get a bit angry now. We are out of booze, our farms aren't watered yet so crops haven't even started to grow, and we don't have a clean well either. Dwarfs keep telling me that we need to build some buckets so that they can at least get some water to drink, but I keep having to remind them that even the ponds have to much salt in them. What we need right now is for some traders to get here, and we pray that they brink something to drink.

15th of Sandstone, 1051

We still haven't gotten any traders to come this way, and worse yet more migrants arrived. Sometime back we started putting all our efforts into building a well and a pump to fill it, but it's taking time. We don't have the dwarf power right now to welcome new joins.

28th of Sandstone, 1051

Thank the gods, we managed to finish making the well. It may not be a deep well, and with the pond it's connected to it wont not last forever, but hopefully it'll last until we can arrange for a better well. I suppose now we can properly welcome the new dwarfs to the island. It would I am sure be a better welcome if we had booze also, but we have to take things one step at a time here. I'm just glad our resident mad genius managed to get some water before things got real bad.

4th of Timber, 1051

One of the migrants died of thirst today. I don't understand what happened really, we had water flowing, but apparently he was to weak to reach the water himself. Degel Adekasob will be remembered. We will do what we can to keep your only son Nil Thobrith safe, and though our rock supply is limited, we will in dwarven tradition honor your body in a proper coffin made of stone.

Derm marched up to the angry crowd.

"Stand aside you frothing gits!" he bellowed, and a path cleared up to a flustered Syntic.

"Get back to what ye were doin'; nothing to see here."

The crowd mumbled a bit and gradually dispersed.

"Thenks Derm, they were getting unruly."

"No problem. I can see why they did it too. Very little to drink anymore, and we still don;t have an underground farm."

Syntic sighed. "I'm working on it as fast as I can. I just hope the traders arrive soon."

"Yeah, too bad we don't have an above ground farm."

"Eh? Above ground farm?"

"Yeah, you know. a farm above ground. those bushes we see around here provide seeds, and we can grow em. Don't need irrigation or anything."

"Yeah... too bad..."

Ya, things are getting progressively worse. A dwarf is still trying to give another dwarf water with buckets we don't have. Trying to get some buckets made right away, but I'm worried that a second dwarf is going to die soon.

18th of Timer, 1051

A second dwarf has died of thirst, this time one of the starting seven that came out here. Zon Zontinoth gave his life working on this fortress, and to add further insult to his death, the caravan showed up just after he passed. Well lets see what they have, and perhaps more dwarfs won't die preventable deaths.

21st of Timber 1051

While the caravan unloads there gear, our bookkeeper Kogan Erushlerom has died of thirst. Luckily he is inside the fortress so he need not worry about his corpse being looted by those monkeys like Zon's was.

25th of Timber 1051

They all just might kill me when they see what I managed to get from the traders. They had absolutely nothing to drink for trade. Not even a barrel of water or a glass of milk. Nothing at all. Sure they had plenty of food that I got from them, but nothing to drink. Unless I can get this lack of water situation under control they might just be wanting to drink my blood. Never mind that I arranged to have a well made that they are happy to drink from, it might just be to little to late. I should have began the building of that well the moment we got on island.

What's worse, I've lived underground so much of my life that I didn't even think to use farming on the surface. Something tells me that if this fortress ever grows to the point where we start doing elections, my name will be the bottom of every list.

15th of Obsidian, 1051

Well now is the moment we've lost to many good dwarfs for, the moment we breach the wall to the ocean and give our ground water so we might grow crops. All the gates have been closed except the one closest to the ocean, and the work order has been placed. Something makes me glad to see that it is Cappstv filling the work order and not the new miner. It may not be as risky as digging a whole into a wall to get to obsidian, but with the amount of failure we have already had, we don't need more.

Luckily my fears are unneeded and the wall is breached. Cappsty managed to get through and close the door before the water got through. Now just to close the final gate and remove the door. While the door is removed, I feel I should mention that the dwarfs that lost their lives in this project have had their coffins put into the channel. Three lives lost, and I'm just glad that the channel didn't have to have more coffins placed in it.

21st of Obsidian, 1051
The first part of the channel is now full and the first set of side doors will now be opened.

1st of Granite, 1051
It's a new year, but making it a year seems like a hollow victory at this point. Celebrations can happen after the fields are planted.

The first two side chambers are nearly full. When they are finished filling they will be sealed from more water and drained into the fields below. While that is happening the second part of the channel will be opened up.

6th of Granite, 1052

The first two fields have been watered, and the second two chambers are now filling. As soon as the first fields are dry they will be filled with all the plump helm seeds we have. Then we will celebrate, with what I am unsure, as we still don't have anything good to drink other than water.

19th of Granite, 1052

Some migrants arrived, though I wish I could give them a warmer welcome, all I've time for right now are getting these fields ready.

20th of Granite, 1052

The second set of fields have been watered, the first set are almost dry, and the third set of chambers now fills.

8th of Slate, 1052

Finally, all the fields have been watered and the first fields are practically ready to be used as I write this in the Fortresses official logs. I'm off to tell everyone that it's time for a celebration, and that we need to welcome the new guys in as best we are able.

8th of Slate, 1052 - second entry

Oh my lord, what are we going to do with all these dwarfs. 22 new migrants all at one time. I figured it was 4 or 5, not 22. We don't even have a proper dining hall yet. I'm going to let them all celebrate and I'm going to go hide in my office.
