There are quite a few games I have seen where it is 2D, but there is a background layer behind the destructable terrain that is purely visual. This seems like those, where the background layer implies that the land has structural support from behind and/or in front even though you cannot interact with it.

Turn 5

Criptfeind dug down to the left, past the soil layer, errecting two loose pillars to hold up the earth above him.  Silhouette traveled past the wheat field to help.  The night sky illuminating his way.  Zako ran in and worked his ass off, (succeeding his extra action chances twice in a row, trippling his work this turn.)  He reinforced the supports with thick logs.  He has used 23 of his 30 units of wood for supports.

Left of them, out of sight.  Nirur Torir dug to meet their tunnel.  Creating a loose support of his own.

Beneath them, Tarran works like a mad man.  Digging towards the right.  If he had an actual tool for mining he could of mined out the gem stone he ran into along the way.

Above ground, Hugehead has climbed from his pit.  Which he is lucky to have accomplished, considering he had an overhang to scale around.  However, he was unable to reach the tree this turn, in which he wanted to harvest for lumber.  Bandages also managed to climb out, and has moved down hill to the right near the tunnel entrance.

And Japa, was beyond 75 pixels from the shore which he swam to, failed his follow up action chance and has begun to drown.

Another earthquake has shaken you all to your bones, (except for Japa, who couldn't feel it as he submerged in water at the time.)  Two thirds of the right hand side of the map have slipped downwards due to the quake.  Furtunately for you all, none of you were near a ledge when it happened.  A cave in has also occurred, due to hugeheads previous tunnel, which he just conveniently left before the cave in.  Which fell down and landed just conveniently where Tarran used to be standing.  [I rolled and I rolled turn after turn, but only once everyone had moved the cave in occurred.  Words cannot express my rage.]

Night is nearly over, Japa is drowning, but not all is lost, he can still attempt a final action next round, which has a high chance of failure due to fatigue from swimming.  Then he'll have to overcome the T-rex, the vulture, and the new creature which he cannot describe as he can only see it's huge mass through the wavey surface of the water.

Speaking of that water, a large wave has been created on the surface due to the quake.

By the way, Tarran, you are starting to feel very warm.  Especially your feet.

Reminder of inventory:
Zako: 7 Wood
Tarran: 6 Metal
Hugehead: A rock, dont you feel special?

New rule discovered.  A pixel may hold its breath for two turns, including the turn it is submerged.
New rule discovered.  Supports may be created, and reinforced once.
New rule discovered.  Climbing has a 75% chance of success, or a 25% chance of success if an overhang is involved.

Alright lets keep going. When we do get Tarran out I say we high tail it out of there and start working on a above ground place. At lest until we can know we are safe underground.

Hooboy, that was too close.

Hah, even though you don't seem to like us the RNG seems to like us. :D

Hey, looks like I've got spare metal, now saving my ass is even more important. Yay!

Also: GEEEEEEEEEEEMMMMMMMMMMMMMSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Guys, we HAVE TO GET SOME TOOLS SO I CAN MINE SOME GEMZ!

Continue as I did last turn.

Unknown to most but the insane and the mystics, Tarran is actually Earth itself, as Earth is sentient like that planet in Avatar. Originally Earth used names such as Terra on the internet, but to protect it's identity it changed letters, now becoming the Tarran you know today.

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

You mean the stars? In the sky? I think he would have said something if there was ash coming down.
