Correct me if i'm wrong, but if this is a 2d game, how will you go around the supports?

A mere technicality of semantics. As many of us have played too much Dwarf Fortress, I'm sure it will all work itself out in the end.

I can not see how it will end badly. Besides there has to be a way to dig safely.

Well you could dig some five or ten pixels and then build a support behind you, tearing them down and building them again as you return to the surface. It will be slower but it should be safe.

If it were 2D, the area right of the lime-green pixel and left of the purple pixel would have caved in.

So I think it's 3D.

Also it seems we are on a 2D plain of a 3D world, can we confirm this?

Nope, but I'm pretty sure it is 3D, why? Because:
If it were 2D, the area right of the lime-green pixel and left of the purple pixel would have caved in.

Not quite true. If this works on DF physics it can stay like that in a 2-D world. On the other hand then phantom would not be dead.
