Underground Speardwarf
« on: July 22, 2010, 04:29:21 pm »

I have a steadygoing fortress that hasn't pierced the 1st cavern layer yet. Before I get into the fun as so many of my other fortresses have seen, I feel it necessary to learn to manage tasks and such. Well, during my production, I received a message saying "The speardwarf has entered a martial trance." My first thought was, oh shit, some jaguars or elephants or something must've ganged up on one of my dwarves who went outside to haul lumber. But then I thought for a second.

I don't have any speardwarves.

The surface is located on around 140-150 z levels. My fortress is located at around 130-140. Zooming to the martial trance message brought me to the 90th Z level, somewhere around the bottom left of the map.
Is it possible that there is a lone dwarf fending off fiends deep within the caverns?

Edit: Posts have been made about progress in knowledge. Look for my name in the thread.

Well, there are legends entries where dwarves and goblins descend into the depths and tame critters, but I'm not sure if you can find such things in Fortress mode... Go and look in that area immediately! For science!
Or, if you don't want to spoil the goodies of the caverns for yourself, upload the save and ask someone else to do it for you.

Oh, be assured, I've struck plenty of spoilers. I'll dig out to his location as soon as possible. I hope he's still alive when I reach him!

And so it was that the dwarf of legends was found deep within the caverns. He was rescued and brought back to the surface, to be celebrated and cherished by all of dwarf kind! Hordes of pilgrims and nobles gathered to see him! ... alas the first visage that struck the swooning crowd was that of a near-blind half-mad dwarf who threw up in his beard.

Are you playing with Deons' genesis mod or another? it at least has an evil underground dwarf civ, which because of the rules of how the underground civs work is constrained to living like the animal-men, but with better gear, and may well be the ones responsible for this event. I'd imagine a couple more would have entered a martial trance though if they were attacked by the beasties down there, so maybe he killed enough animals to get named, becoming friendly, and then was attacked by his former comrades.

Unmodded, the only alteration is the pop cap to 100.

don't be too excited because if he entered a martial trance, he was problably surrounded, and i'm pretty sure someone, adventure mode players especially, knows how fun that is.

I'm hoping for a name, so I can look up his legends.

Or worse. He triggered a martial trance specifically to bait you. He's been long possessed by the DEMONS OF HELL and only wants to murder everyone in your fort.

Incredible, I've never heard of anything like this.  Maybe he's some random adventurer that wandered into a cave sometime during worldgen.  Wouldn't it be awesome if underground exploration missions were actually a feature in DF and you could rescue them and turn them to your cause?  I'm looking forward to hearing more about this brave speardwarf.

If the Unknown Speardwarf has killed anything, it should show up on the unit list or as a corpse on the stock screen. Does the Civ screen show any cave dweller civilizations? If that's what he's up against, then he has a pretty good shot at holding out for a while if he's wearing any kind of armor at all.

THE SPEARDWARF'S FATE IS YET TO BE KNOWN
Upon breaching the cavern, a small gathering of cave swallow people were standing around, about 7-8. Normally my single squad would have killed them, but because of job cancellation I cannot defeat them. I need to bring my hunter over to snipe them. Onto our hero.

Looking at the cave swallow people, there are no wounds or blood present. In fact, there is no evidence of ANY contact at all. I predict that he had seen the large gathering, entered the trance and run off. I cannot find him but will send a squad as soon as I can carve stairs down to them.

omg suspenseful!!!!!!!!

Convincing adventurers to work in your fort would be a cool mechanic for basically generating highly skilled migrants.

I breached the cavern and slaughtered the enemies. Looking upon the reports, the speardwarf's name is Eral Rigothzasit, with some accented characters and things. Copied the save and am looking through legends screen for his name. With no idea of his age though, this will be hard.

Edit: Is there a way to filter the legends to see only dwarves?
