You can filter on a string with f.

Upon finding the lost dwarf he was quoted in saying "What took you so damn long and where is my beer!"

I'm dense as stone. What would I type into the string filter to find dwarves, or even everyone with his first name?

You can't search by race and there are too many commonalities with first names, so go with his last name.

Yeah. Open up legends, historical figures yada yada.

Press f, then just start typing Rigothzasit. As long as he is notable enough he will be on there, unless you have culled unimportant historical figures and he is just some random dorf, but that seems unlikely.

The search lies fruitless. It is obvious that Eral wiped himself/herself off of history. Whoever he/she was, they were a great warrior that realized that their being known would endanger those who discovered them.
I think I'll write a story about that person soon.

So he's still alive somewhere?

I can just imagine him as a half-mad lone survivor of a Fort that dug too deep and fell to the might of Forgotten Beasts. He then slayed them and began traveling the underground, facing all abominations that crossed his path in a quest of revenge for the fallen Dwarves.

I'll give you the summary of my experiences and knowledge.

Segment 1: Normal moderate-sized fortress work. Noticed combat message. Zooming to location brought up the 90th Z level, deep underground.

Segment 2: Began excavations. Tunneled down into caverns and located cave fish people located at where the original message came from. No evidence of dwarf or any blood at all.

Segment 3: Breached cavern and slaughtered cave people. Brief recon of general area showed that the dwarf had run off.

Segment 4: Saved game, searched through legends and could not find dwarf.

The speardwarf is ALIVE. Both him and his foes never engaged in combat. So far he is an enigma. Searching through these caves would yield more info, but I would hardly want to leave my fotress unprotected to attack by sending even one of my few dwarves into the caverns. Starvation would also occur. By now, he could be anywhere.

Hit z, go to stocks, scroll down to weapons, hit tab, and find the first spear that is in purple. Hit z again and it'll take you to his location.

Maybe they'll return at some point. You could start a fort on the next area over and do nothing but search the caverns, see if he stayed within 16 local region tiles. Just having him in your fort for a while, killing a few things, should put him on your legends list, showing us exactly what's going on, or at least everything he did during his stay.

It may require some creativity to catch him, have traps set and keep your eyes peeled.

We must of course consider that it could be a bug that caused him to spawn as wildlife do, ripping him from another fort's population, then after seeing the foomen tribe, ran away (explained away by BEING spawned and treated as an animal, and thus unwilling to enter combat as civ member warriors always do, rather than retreating, as he did.), and at some point the game remembered his loyalties to his civ, and he was automatically sent homeward bound/removed from existence.

No, but all names in DF are unique, so you could just filter for that.

Not neccesarily. I've had a few cases where 3 or 4 or 5 dwarves had the same first and last name. Its probably a fluke of the RNG.

Drop cats into the cavern. Lots of cats, both male and female. The resulting catsplosion will explore the caverns for you, and even find the nasties such as GCS and others.
