Population Cap
« on: July 22, 2010, 08:34:23 am »

So I had my population cap at 15 when I genned the world and embarked.  I hit the cap and have now decided I'd like more dwarves.  I edited the d_init file to a higher number, but I don't seem to be getting migrants?  Was the cap set when I embarked?

Changing the popcap should work. You eiither haven't waited long enough, or have a dead civ and won't be getting more migrants regardless.

"Your fortress has attracted no migrants this season"

Thats the message I'm getting.  I've also never seen a trade caravan, and I've been running for well over a year now, almost two.  Something wrong with my fort?

Your civilization is probably dead.  Check your civilizations screen.  If the information for the dwarven civilization says "This land has no important leaders" or something similar, then the dwarves were wiped out in world gen and your fortress contains the last dwarves in the world.

Consider yourself lucky - even when I set the population cap to 0 I STILL get migrants most seasons. It's been driving me nuts on my fortresses which I want to keep at 7 dwarves.

i think setting it to 0 makes it infinite amount of dwarves, no cap

You wil always get the first two waves of migrants. And as I recall it mostly ignores any number below 20. And 0 often does mean uncapped so...

If you want only seven dwarves, kill off your extras after embarking with an extinct dwarven civ. Or just keep killing your extras with a live civ...

I'm not sure the cap works at all.  I set it to 7 in my fortress and I still got a wave of migrants.

The POP_CAP doesn't work for low numbers (up to 30-40) ...
And, as migrants come in waves, you can have 39 dwarves with a cap of 40, and get another wave ... of 10 dwarves ...

Migrants appear to come by the year.  I have had the first migration of a year filling the limit and the next two or three spilling well over.

1) get a basic for set up
2) get enough food to last for a year or so
3) create dining rooms and statue gardens.
4) let the dwarves party.

New small dwarves will arrive soon
