Real life CATSPLOSION
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:54:59 am »

http://www.thelocal.se/27896/20100720/

A family in Sweden was discovered to have 191 in their household, most of which were in such a bad state they had to be put to sleep.

Quote
"There was an incredible stench of ammonia that made the air hardly breathable," Marie Lundin, a Stockholm social services veterinarian, told the newspaper.

P.S. I wonder if they experienced lowered fps.

Real life catsplosions often involve real life animal cruelty. They're a lot less fun than the virtual kind.

Sad to read about, that story.

Am I the only one that finds it kind of stupid to say to someone "you can't take care of this many cats, so we will... WITH DEATH!"

Why is it ok to euthenise a cat but not a human? Why is it assumed that the cats want to die just because they're incredibly ill? Do cats get into cat heaven if they're put to sleep and don't die in cat-battle? Where did they get the number of 9 cats as a maximum? If you have 10 cats do they come and put down the extra one? Is there a minimum number of cats you have to have? What about other animals, is there a min/max limit on dogs or budgies? If you have 9 cats and then buy 3 sheep, do you have to get rid of some of the cats? Do conjoined-twin cats count as one or two? Do big cats like lions or tigers count towards your cat limit, or are they a seperate catagory (pun intended, hehe). If you have 9 cats and then buy a tiger can you let it eat one of the other cats, thus solving the problem? Is there a special Swedish cat-police force that goes round knocking on doors to count peoples cats?

So many questions!

I guess it's not really euthanasia, it's just about the money. Just from being neglected cats arent going to be in the vegetable state humans tend to be when the discussion starts. I guess.

But a lot of those cats probably needed expensive medical care to be able to live somewhat painfree, and hey, it's just a cat -.-

I dont know, it's probably the same as with eating meat. Being livestock probably isnt funny, at all, and being slaughtered isnt, either.
If McD sold Cheeseburgers made of people, it would be an outrage. But it's okay to use cows.

I think that's pretty screwed up, too. And I'm not even a cannibal or a vegetarian, for that matter.

ps: I like how you go from superserious to swedish cat task force.

I wonder if Swedish animal shelters are as packed as they are in the United States. If so, maybe they just euthanize the overflow...?

Probably, because:

Many of the animals were sick or injured and 173 had to be put down at the house.
Even crazy cat lady doesnt have only 18 healthy cats, out of 191.

P.S. I wonder if they experienced lowered fps.
That probably was the reason they called social services in the first place.

About the euthanasia thing: the upkeep of one animal is cheap; the upkeep of 196 is just overdoing it.

The other option is to turn the things loose, and feral cats and dogs are a bad idea (in populous areas).

Seriously, 196 sick and probably dying cats is going to hit whatever shelters are in the area like a brick.

It's not okay to just euthanize humans because humans are sentient beings with legal rights.

Damn it I hate cats.

I wasn't talking about just randomly selecting people to be put down, more about people who actively want to be put out of their misery, but can't beacuse assisted suicide is illegal. Dr. Jack Kavorkian kinda stuff.

But yeah, I think they should all be released into the wild. I cannot think of a single situation that wild packs of feral animals wouldn't make more interesting.

God, I haven't heard Kevorkian's name in ages.

Anyway, probably three-quarters of them will die within a week of release. Cats are, however, very adaptable.

Yeah, we're not talking about wild packs of feral animals, we're talking about a large barrel of sick cats who won't make it out of the back yard before they collapse.

Family Guy was right, sick cats are the grossest thing in the world.  My sister's cat had its leg amputated the other day because it had a benign tumor that enveloped its entire foot (Still benign though, I don't get it).  Grossest thing in the world, if I hadn't moved out I probably would've cut the leg off myself before long.

Should just send all the excess cats to Australia. They have a shortage right?
