Peer into the vault, if you cannot see the bottom then drop the can and listen for depth.

You can see the floor, though it's too far to jump down.

Go downstairs into the dark room we were in before.

You enter the formerly dark room.

The skeleton is holding a key in his left hand. It is firmly clenched, though you can wrestle it out.

You notice its right leg is twisted in an odd way and its right arm is dislocated. This is a bit disconcerting. Your adventuring nerves must still be shaken from the encounter with the eyemonsterthing.

press button

You press the button and the door opens up. That was easy!

examine wires too

The wires look just like the ones in the above light room. They run from the ceiling into the wall.

pour some oil into the hole where the mirror used to be.  carefully place the string so that it is touching the oil but also has a good length extending out of the hole.  use the string as a wick, light the string on fire with sparks from the strange device (if needed use one of the notes of paper as kindling).  use the fire to get a look into the hole and see what's what.

Nah, nevermind just go through the doorway that the skeleton limbs are pointing at!

I suggest not touching the floor yet.

If there's a skeleton on the floor, that indicates that something killed it there.

There's probably an adventurer-related death trap or all kinds of noisome beasties down there.

grab the skull to reenact the "alas poor yorik" scene from hamlet, but instead citing the "to be or not to be" part. then add the skull to your inventory, it's a nice lucky charm.

A fellow of infinite jest, that skeleton was. :(

You should rest here a moment, contemplating the brevity of life and the dangers of the Adventuring profession. And then bury the skeleton into the rubble in the other room. You can never have enough karma points.
