I find it strange how most of my early fantasy was from Heroes of Might and Magic, Dragonlance, and MtG, long before I read LotR, so my idea of fantasy was shaped before the Big One hit me. Lord of the Rings didn't seem to go into much detail of the races, and stuck with the heroes interacting with snipplets of them. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

Tolkien was a world-builder and a linguist first and foremost, so that's understandable.

Yeah, I'm planning on magic, but that's getting off topic.

Isn't steampunk in itself a fantasy setting?

Steampunk, or at least good steampunk, is Science Fiction, because it goes into the science.

As ein said, the good kind is primarily Science Fiction but it's one of those settings that really can shift between genres.

Plus with Steampunk, you could create Gnomes who worship the Gnomish God of Heavy Artillery.

You know, I did something like that when I attempted to write Fantasy/Science-Fiction.

...Then my computer died after I had written about a fourth of the story.

I was sad, and never got back to writing again.

I'm thinking of making a worldbuilding thread for the setting I have in mind, because I think I'd have a exponentially better work ethic if people actually saw what I wrote, and it could be fun (hopefully)...

would you guys be interested?
