13th of Felsite

The hospital is complete. As the sole power bearer in the fortress I have also set up an office in the hospital.

15th of Felsite

With the hospital done I have decided to move on to our next project. We will construct a roof between the fortress and the bed house. This will prevent us from getting covered in snow when we have to sleep.

16 of Felsite

Thankfully the now giant leopard is staying far south of the fortress. Let's hope it stays that way.

23rd of Felsite

Well the roof is done. While up on top inspecting it I saw another lung fish. There's so many of them that I think we'll start trapping them. After all there's no other means of food production around here. Unless someone wants to hunt our giant leopard friend...

25th of Felsite

I made an animal trap but I think I'll let one of the other dwarves do the chasing. I have decided to take stock of what little we have.

26th of Felsite

Eclipsetail managed to catch the lungfish I saw on the roof but, like the idiot she is, left it there because I didn't tell her where to put it. I sighed and told her to put it in the room with the mason's shop.  Anyway I told her to build more traps. Hopefully she'll know which wood to use.

1st of Hematite

Well it's summer now. Not that I'd notice it without the calendar. It's as cold as ever here.

4th of Hematite

Finally, that hellish snowstorm has ended. Maybe summer will be nice.

11th of Hematite

Damn. Guess summer is the same as spring here. Winter is going to be tough. On the plus side I've finally found a use for Eclipsetail. She's been filling our stocks with vermin. Of course I'm not going to eat them until we're out of food...

22nd of Hematite

I saw the Giant Leopard today. As soon as it saw me it turned tail and ran. Wonder why? Anyway it's good to know that it's not a threat.

Are there no plants to gather? Snow covers them and makes them invisible, but I don't think it destroys them. It would be nice to have something available to drink other than aquifer water with rotting corpses in it.

Really? I didn't know that. I'll try that out. Maybe build a green house for growing. I'll have another update tomorrow, have work today. Also sorry eclipsetail, just trying to stay in character  ;D.

23rd of Hematite

Today Eclipsetail made a miraculous discovery! She found that there are edible plants under the snow. She was digging for vermin when she found a strange plant that seemed like it may be edible! She's going out to get some seeds. Meanwhile I've told Kalrirr to continue vermin hunting. Kalrirr is seeming happy lately which is good. The last thing this fort needs is depression.

26th of Hematite

Kalrirr managed to catch a two-legged rhino lizard today. That'll make for some variety when we're down to eating vermin. Of course we have plenty of plump helmets left.

28th of Hematite

Eclipsetail has managed to find two different useful plants. The first is a dye called silver barb, discovered by Urist the Bold on his journey into the ice wastes in the year 56. This doesn't sound particularly useful though considering we can't build a mill stone or a quern. The second plant is newly discovered. Eclipsetail named it prickle berry. I tried one and it tasted terrible. Might make a nice wine though. Too bad there's not a brewer among us.

1st of Malachite

I asked around and the Warsmith says that his brother was a brewer back in the mountain homes. While he has no first hand experience he said he could certainly build a still and give it a shot. I gave him the go ahead. After all we're down to 15 drinks.

4th of Malachite

The leopard appears to have shrunk again. Andreus spotted it on a hill in the distance at normal size. Very strange.

6th of Malachite

The Warsmith finished some booze today. He decided to stick with the basics and make some plump helmet wine. He said it turned out all right but I'm a little dubious of it. Nonetheless it's good to have the assurance that if we run out of booze more can and will be produced.

9th of Malachite

Eclipsetail discovered another plant today, whipvine. She said it would make great flour or alcohol. I keep telling her we can't mill things but she can't seem to get that in her head.

10th of Malachite

We now have 18 vermin ready for consumption. I doubt we'll need more so I've ordered the stop of the vermin hunt. Kalrirr's back to doing nothing.

12th of Malachite

Eclipsetail discovered another dye called hide leaf or something. I don't even know why i bothered writing this down. She keeps coming up to me, excited with every new plant she found. She doesn't seem to realize that dyes and flours are completely useless to us. It really gets on my nerves.

16th of Malachite

The Warsmith brewed up some silver barbs today. He called the finished product, "Gutter Cruor." Quite a strange name, but he's a strange man.

19th of Malachite

Well the shape-shifing leopard has left. Now a tiger has entered the course. Hopefully it's as cowardly as that leopard.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I was feeling lazy and nothing particularity interesting happened.

Obviously.

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

Yaddy as a side note i would probably suggest forbidding plump helmets and prickle berries for brewing as they can be consumed directly. When you finally get an above ground farm up and running, then youll be gold.

Unless youve already started, you might want to make wood crafts as well, your going to need that trade and it looks like wood and booze is all you can make right now

Hell if you have a spot on the list, i might even take a turn. I certainly have enough time. I would also be happy with being dorfed.

I'll second that. Please dwarf me if that is possible (if not at the moment, it can certainly wait) and add me to the turn list after Twobeard.

How about arranging a cave-in over some free room and then building artificial floors in place of natural?

Can you cave through natural floor with constructed walls?

If it works, it would get my vote. Punching a hole through the top of one of those rooms would mean the main entrance can be properly sealed off with defensible walls. All those ramps around the entrance are making it impossible to wall off the bedroom building properly. If it was built up above the dining room, it could be made so that the only entrance was a staircase down - much more secure.

I don't know about punching through natural floors and wiki is unclear on the matter, but I think I remember that working. As for getting rid of the ramps, a wall can be built over them and then removed (or not removed).
