would they know the potential combatants or not? For example, if a character makes it through to the semifinals, would they know who the other three are, and be able to prepare accordingly?

How about this, in an attempt to cover all bases, shut various things up and get on with the fights:

Each combatant, at the beginning of the tournament, is given a list and a bio of every other combatant, with a personality description and fighting style. They get three days of preparation before each battle. However, they do not know who they are fighting, and they do not get to watch the other fights. That way, they must be evenly prepared for anyone, even people who are already eliminated, preventing Batman levels of Crazy Prepared.

Agreed. Though Batman himself would of course STILL be crazy prepared, prepared to fight all of the contestants at any time. All at once.

Actually, I'm thinking Ajax; an actual warrior-king has got to be a little better than a soldier, vengeful or not.

On the other hand, This guy is a thousand years later than Ajax, with presumably better metals and possibly better health

That said, Guts is Japanimion, so there goes that. I'm sticking with

Ajax

Luke Skywalker against someone purely melee (with claws)? Luke is definetly going to win that one.

I'm gonna vote Ajax, he's got alot of strategic experience behind him. No idea about guts though.
