You can ignore demands.

If the noble likes socks and pig tails he'll probably just demand pig tail socks, in which case you can make him some pig tail socks and he'll be utterly ecstatic while eating his cold, raw, plump helmets.

Or ignore the mandates and they'll get over it while eating their lavish meals in a legendary dining room. Seriously, Urist McMayor, slade? Raw adamantium? If you weren't a legendary mason I'd throw you in a fire.

A few questions:

Did you have any roads/bridges? Did they touch the edge of the map?
Did you have depot access according to the "D" screen?
Did the caravan survive the year before?

I had bridges. 4 8x2 and one 4x4 rough bridges. Some bridges touched the edge of the map. Hadn't made roads yet.   I had depot access. The caravan had survived.

it seems as if roads and bridges are irrelevant to barons
i have 2 1x2 bridges hooked to levers to close off the caverns
no roads
liason asked me if i want a baron
i picked an eligible dawrf
i got a baron
years later i found a screen where i needed roads for the king
the roads did not touch the edge of the map, far from it
the two bridges i made did not count for road value
i made 1 10x10 raod of gold for extra value, and one more to reach the limit i needed
i met the offerings needed to get the king, after that i was not even able to offer items to the dwarven caravan
i easily met the architecture requirementi was, incidentally, built near a mountain

Didn't want to gravedig, but creating another thread is probably unnecessary.

I succeeded in getting a Baron as did another person; I was using a fresh 0.31.12 world so there's no overlay from previous versions.  The essential part is making sure the caravan has left the map before meeting with the liaison.  Apparently, the caravan surviving is a requirement that specifically applies to the current one that accompanies the liaison.  If it makes it off the map and you meet the requirements, meeting with them will trigger the baron.

I'm going to see if this will work with the other nobles so I'll report back with more info.  The baron isn't bugged, but it's a major pain in the ass keeping the liaison away long enough for the caravan to leave.  Locking him in a bedroom helps.

So that's a decent way to get the Baron, but what about the Dungeon Master? I've gotten the Baron three times now, but not once have I been able to appoint a Dungeon Master and I would very much like to.

That's what I'm going to be working on going forward.  The first goal is to get the count/duke (if possible) as well as the king and go forward from there.

Neat! It worked for me too. Has this been added to the bug tracker?

Okay, I now got the trigger for upgrading my baron to a count after letting the caravan leave safely and then holding the meeting.  This means the duke should be next.

The big question is whether or not I'll be getting any of the supporting nobles.  It's possible that they do in fact require a duke/king despite saying they can be appointed by the baron/count.  However, at a minimum it's possible to get these three core nobles; it appears not to be a bug at all so much as it is a difficult to fulfill and not immediately obvious requirement.  Fixing it by either removing this requirement or adjusting it to apply to the previous year's caravan would make it work completely as designed.  However, if I don't get the other nobles I'll have to assume there's something wrong with them...but I won't be able to confirm this until I get the king.

I want to also give credit to Miuq, whose post on the bug tracker was what inspired me to test out this condition.

Okay, this method got me all the way to the duke.  The only position left to get is the king, and from there I can start playing around to see if any  of the other nobles pop up after I get the king.  However, there's nothing in the raws that would suggest an inherent problem with any of them; perhaps you have to get the duke in order to get the other nobles despite some of them being appointed by the baron/count/duke.

We'll see fairly shortly.  If all this doesn't work, I'll just have to conclude that these other nobles are bugged (probably due to the economy being bugged) and wait until the next release.

I just tried the "lock the mayor in his room until the caravan leaves" method and it totally worked.  The requirements had been ridiculously over-met for the preceding two years and nothing.  So this is a bug and its work-around.

Using this method i got it to work after 9 years of no luck, i still haven't managed to attract a DM yet though even though i made him a huge electrum vault filed with adamantine mittens and cloaks.

Code: [Select]
Created wealth : 16.518.565
> Architecture :  1.961.674
Imported wealth:     41.826
Exported wealth:  1.861.456

Population: 178

My civ screen when viewing my civ shows 'Something: 40 P'

I also have quite large green glass road going to the map edges, i have discovered and mined adamantine, i have a fortress guard and the dwarven caravan always survived.
I also made sure to meet the required amount of dispatched jobs in the manager.

The next step you should have is "becoming the capital", to get the king.  However, he's not really a noble in the sense of the others because I've never had him make a single mandate or demand...

I made a small change to the entity_default file to remove that "needs hammer/skill here" tag from the hammerer...I want to see if that might affect the nobles due to an extra entry.  I doubt it, but it's worth a shot.
