A dwarf died today
« on: July 19, 2010, 04:59:07 pm »

A dwarf died today in the hospital, and another dwarf ran in and jumped in bed with his corpse.  I decided to use the hospital as a tomb too.

I keep thinking glacier fortress would be fun, but it always ends up as cave layer fortress.

Dwarves. Call 'em what you want, but they're damned efficient when it comes to claiming a dead person's former belongings.

One of my miners was recently stranded at the bottom of my third cavern and died before a I realized it. I ended up having to build a bridge to where he was and by the time I got there his (former) friends, particularly my mayor, had long been suffering from his body not being in a proper resting place. The first thing my mason does once he finishes the bridge? Grabs the guy's shoe.

I am begining to think dwarfs have a "thing" with feet if you get what I mean.

The worst I saw was one of my nobles who had a fetish for collecting underwear. IIRC and maybe I don't that was half way through development for 40d; I could swear that he started to collect the underwear of various deceased creatures.

I find that DF2010, more than 40d, leaves everything coated in several layers of various types of grime and bodily fluids.  I've got stuff encrusted with blood, spattered with forgotten beast ichor, splashed with mud and vomit and soaking wet, and that has no negative effect whatsoever on its value to my citizens.  Leather leggings that stand up all by themselves?  Hells yeah!

No, what's not normal is when the various forgotten beast ichors start eating away at your skin. Though I bet dwarves are used to horrible things happening to people they know.

I have a dwarf in vegetating state since 10 years, i think he have an out of the body experience, and found his soul mate, maybe they even have some babies somewhere in space.

Sometime you wish they could die already, but no.

This made me laugh, but it is kind of disturbing that this does not surprise me at all. It seems like normal dwarven society to me.

I thought this was going to be a eulogy.

Anyway. The hospital is where people go to die, so you're saving time and money by making it a tomb.

... now I've got to make a hatch/pit in the back of the hospital that goes to my crypts from now on.

Better yet, I'll make one of those graveyards where every dwarf is buried in a "mound" in front of the hospital, with a statue tombstone, the way Retro did his (but, you know, in front of the hospital).  I could almost put up a sign that says "All ye who enter here, abandon all hope." (plus an "employee enterance" on the side.)

I like to think the dwarves might be comforted by having their friends remain with them.  Because of that, I always incorporate my tombs into the normal fortress.  Hence, the hospital has rows of beds which transition right into coffins because I ran out of wood for beds.

My favorite is still my combo dining room/crypt.  The tables and chairs made a ring around a series of pitchblende coffins, with the dwarves facing each other over the coffins.  It's like eating with grandpa.
