A way to stop siege engineers running would be nice!
« on: June 09, 2008, 12:32:00 am »

Okay, I have a murder-alley set up. The dwarves operating the siege engines are seperated by nine tiles of moat and a fortified wall from any possible harm. Yet they won't even fire the damn ballastae, because every time they almost get to the ballasta to fire it, they get "interrupted by goblin lasher".

NONE OF THE GOBLINS IS A CROSSBOWMAN. There is literally NO way for the goblins to harm my siege engineers.

Something needs to be done. Maybe make siege engineer jobs only get interrupted if the engineer takes damage, or maybe make them a form of military so they won't run at all? Or make it so civilians don't run at the mere sight of hostiles, only when those hostiles can draw a path to them?

I've got a battery of ballastae lined up and I can't bloody kill the gobbers? What the heck?!

I'd prefer if Siege operating was a Military weapon choice.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

I propose the option of chaining the dwarves to their siege engines.

I propose that civilians with the siege operator labor turned on do not run from enemy.

I propose you put Seige engines further back... Compared that they have 150 square attack distance... I think you have a bit more room.

I propose Dwarven Commisars: If you abandon your siege post, you get Hammered.

@Shadow - Really?  So we need <MORE> Hammerer's running around?  Not really... but I just had this image of a line of seige engines raining fire and destruction on an approaching line of elves/goblins.  Throughout the line are dwarves who are brandishing hammers and screaming epiteths and threats at the seige operators.

Then one of the seige operators breaks and gets flattened by the nearest commisar.

If you will not serve on the front lines...

Not Hammerers, just Commisars. They don't Hammer anyone except siege operators (or other military roles) whose courage breaks and they start to flee.

This, of course, resets everyone else's courage to highest.  :)

Oh, and they get a really freakin' sweet awesome hat!

An easy solution often mentioned is to make siege operators soldiers. That way if an enemy comes into sight and range they will do thier best to shoot it instead of running away from the catapult they are suppost to be crewing.

Will the soldiers still use the siege weapons?

They would if they were changed. All of the current problems we have with siege operators stem from the fact that they are civilians as far as the game is concerned.

Soldier Ai is to attack mindlessly, civilian ai is the opposite.

well, if the tasks "Load catapult" and "Fire Catapult" would make siege operators not flee, i would be very content! Finally there would be some use for siege engines...

Hmm...  Actually, with AI as it is now, if you made siege operators military instead of peasants, they would simply abandon their siege weapons in order to join in the brawl whenever they actually saw an enemy...  >.<

Poke their eyes out and they'll work fine.
