A forgotten beast has appeared
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:45:39 pm »

It is a blob of salt and it has characteristic x and y
I sent my entire military after it, one of my axedwarves charged it and cut its wings straight off, and proceeded with bashing it to pieced. the rest joined in on the bashing. They've been bashing the blob for quite a while now and it just won't die
The battle is still raging and a number of my best soldiers have died. The blob shows no signs of further injury.

Help?

I heard that some beasts cannot be killed by conventional means, but if there's an inorganic blob I can't kill, wtf do I do? I could set up a trap but there's so few time.
To be perfectly honest if this stuff is possible I'd rather wall off the caverns entirely, this is just stupid.

Indeed, some inorganics are hard to slay seeing as how they're... well, inorganic. However, there's two things that always kill anything: cave-ins and drawbridges. That said, as your soldiers scramble with it build either a cave-in trap (with a support triggered by a lever, for instance, or even manually by a miner) if the surroundings allow it, or a really long bridge, which the soldiers would flee across before it raises, and slams back down as the salty sod gets within range--easier if the bridge is, again, long.

Your other option, mind you, is to simply wait for them to actually kill it, however long that may take.

Gah it killed all of my axedwarves.
Damn it I know what I have to do, fuck these caverns. I have acces to a whole lot of magma, let's see how they like being flooded in the stuff.
Before I do it, can I fill it completely with magma or does it disappear at the 'edges' of the cave?

Forgotten beasts are immune to being crushed under drawbridges.

The only things that are universally effective are cave-ins, or being encased in cooling magma.  Merely embedding the creature in magma will kill some forgotten beasts, but not all.  I'm not sure if creatures made of salt will be killed by magma.

Unfortunately, these kinds of traps (cave-ins, obsidian traps, magma traps) are the kind of thing you need to set up well in advance.  I wall off the caverns until I have a forgotten beast killing trap set up.

Truly? Scratch that, then.

You could do that or simply wall off the caverns and go back in when you're ready. :P But yes, I believe magma flows off the edges.

Get version 31.10. Inorganic forgotten beasts are killable there.

Seriously though, I'm probably going to take what I need from the caverns, wich is a live giant cave spider (saw one skulking around) and probably going to make a closed off fishing area at the giant pool I found and then wall every acces off. Unkillable blobs my dwarven militarys shiny armored asses.

Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Do u use 0.31.10 version? I mean, if you use 08 one then ye, you can't kill some inorganic with weapons. But as i read - in 10 version it was fixed.(nerfed maybe? i mean FB should become ultimate challenge for dwarves and you can't really think about killing it with soldiers, even best)

I had a salt blob appear in 31.10 and it fell quickly to my axedwarves.  Definitely killable in 31.10.
