That could be messy. As a really lazy shot, why not simply build the magma forges on the level above the magma? Make a channel for the magma to flow through (a small one would suffice) and build your magma forges so that at least one of their squares are on the magma, and you're done.

A regular forge is a magma forge then? And ok. I wanted the magma up top for another reason. I wanted to use it and water as a super defence. I wanted to drop them onto anyone trying to get into my fort. But thanks. I will move my forges down abouve the magma pool. Well I would its just that the level above is the empty space of a cavern.

No. But it's pretty obvious from the build menu which one uses magma and which one doesn't.

afaik it's b e and then there's a list containing both the regular forge and the magma one. For a magma forge the upper middle part of the forge has to be suspended above a high enough level of magma.
I think your pumps could work but why not build a pump stack instead? It's not like you need a whole lot of magma to fuel the forge so one tile will do.

Then again I'm fairly new to all this and only used pumps once to get the magma where I need it.

Actually it doesn't just have to be the bit that lights up. You can have a magma forge with a corner hanging over the magma below and it'd still work. So long as that light is lit, you're good to go.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Man, I'm still a noob with some of these mechanics T_T I wouldn't know how to properly make a pump stack or whatever.

The problem with having my stuff down at the magma is hauling all the sand down for my glass. Also magma+water defence system would be nice.

You need open space on either side of the pumps, to give the fluid some space to go to, otherwise you are trying to pump into solid rock.

Look over this section of the wiki (especially study the pictures on the right) then make a test fort and try building some pump stacks for water.  Once you have successfully pumped water up a pump stack, then go build your magma stack.
