The biggest number game
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:54:47 am »

The object of this game is to post the biggest number out of anybody. There will be two categories that people will compete in: Biggest number, and the longest time with their number as the biggest in the thread. A few rules/things to note:

-You have to post a number. Something which you could, if you had enough time, write out as a sequence of digits. Things like infinity will not be allowed.
-You are allowed to post your number using whatever notation you wish, as long as the notation is explained, if neccesary. 23 would be acceptable, for instance.
-Your number may be challenged. In that case, you will be required to prove that its magnitude is as you claim it is.
-Don't use other people's numbers in yours. For example, I don't want to see "X's number plus one".

Let's start this off with 1.

It hits the character limit of 40k.

40,000 - (13(text) + 13(code tags) + 19(spoiler tags)) = 39,955
39,955 / 6 = 6659. The original 99,999 is one of those numbers.

I tried to make it up to the perfect best possible with the forums character limit, but I'm to lazy so I gave up.

This contest is silly without a character limit.  (I don't count 40k, as that's huge.)

I challenge the Busy Beaver number, as it's noncomputable.

Anyway, let G = Graham's Number and A(N,M) be the Ackermann Function.

Toaster's Number = A(A(A(G!,G!)!,A(G!,G!)!)!,A(A(G!,G!)!,A(G!,G!)!)!)!

I could expand that more, but eh.

Would that be larger then A(G->A(G->A(G->A(G->A(G->G->G)->G)->G),A(G->A(G->A(G->A(G->A(G->G->G)->G)->G),G)) using Chained Arrow Notation?

I think virex's number is way larger than that. It's probably countless orders of magnitude larger than the number of atoms in the universe.

Now, it's time for the Ed number.

Let us define a function A(n). A(n) is given as n→n→n...(nn! times), using the conway chain arrow notation.
For the purposes of this post, we will also define Am(n). Am(n) is A(A(n)→A(n)→A(n)...(m times)).
Now let us define a funtion B(n). B(n) is given as AAA...(A(n) times)(n)(n)(n).
Next, we shall define a function C(n). C(n) is given as BBB...(B(n) times)(n)(n)(n).
We shall continue defining functions in this manner, denoting each one by the next letter. The functions after Z will be denoted by underlined numbers (e.g. 1 would be the first function after Z).

The Ed number is given as G(G), where G is Graham's number.

Graham's number by itself is already goddamn huge. The number of towers for the first, smallest term of G is already larger than the number of Planck Volumes in the universe. Both Virex and Toaster are throwing this absolutely incomprehensible number along because they can. I have no idea which number is larger.
