Can marksdwarves accidentally hit allies during a battle?

I'm not sure about dwarves, but I know that goblins definately can't, I had a bronze colossus wander in during a huge goblin seige, all the melee goblins swarmed it and the goblin bowmen just shot willy nilly into the fray and no goblins were harmed by them. I assume the same will be true for dwarves, but I've not tried.

I have also not yet seen a friendly arrow strike a dwarf it wasn't meant to hit.

I've had lots of stray goblin bolts miss their intended targets and fly 2-3 time further away and hit some poor dwarf in the leg or something. They tend to fly much further away if they miss in the newest versions.

I might also have had a human's bolt hit a dwarf of mine after missing an enemy goblin (traders joined in the fight), but I'm not fully sure.

Only friendly fire would be from traps and siege weapons. Crossbows and melee weapons cannot accidentally hit a friendly.

Can you imagine the immense amount of carnage and Fun there would be if they could? "DON'T LET URIST NEAR THAT CROSSBOW HE'S ONLY NOVICE HE'LL KILL US ALL!"

Yeah, I think I'd quite like it if they could.

Apart from anything else, I could just have murderholes all over my battlements and strategically drop kittens until all the goblin siege has shot itself to bits.

Actually it would be funny.

I agree, especially if it's primarily the stupid children wandering over to check out the battle that get hit.

A pit of cats is very useful actually, if only as an arrow magnet. Make a pit full of dogs, cats, or whatever. As many creatures as possible. Make sure all invaders walk by the pit and get a clear shot at it. Don't allow them to reach it by melee of course, but if the ranged goblins can see it they will shoot at it. Until they run out of ammo. Then you have out of ammo goblins to butcher with axes.

Any losses from the kitten pile will be quickly replaced by reproduction.

Most people say that friendly fire is not in the game, but many times in 40d, while reclaiming a fort that had fallen to HFS, after a skirmish where my axedwarves held off the HFS while my marksdwarves fired from a safe distance, I'd check the survivors and see that some of my axedwarves had bolts lodged in their legs. The deaths would have been too fresh for tantrums to have begun yet.

I don't know how else to account for this.
