Cybersphere is basically a MOO (Like a MUD) online.  It is based on cyberpunk concepts and ideals (High level of technology, corporate power) it has a highly developed system of medicine/injury/vehicles/the matrix (Like the internet!) and combat.  It's Role-play enforced and it takes a bit to get everything down (And a decade to learn everything) but it will suck you in if it gets a chance.  It also has clones and permanent death.  Clones are good and cheap.  Character generation can also be very very detailed.  I figure any people who can plat ASCII games can play this, give it a chance.

Played it, got bored eventually. "role-play-enforced" is of dubious applicability in CS. Basically you have to write a story for your character if you want extra points, but it's not worth it to spend too much effort because pretty much any generic story will get accepted, whereas, on the other hand, there is a game moderator who will reject *any story* out of hand basing himself on minor details. Beyond that, is as much of a PK fest as any other MUD, with next to no RP whatsoever.
The engine itself is pretty detailed, Iĺl grant you that.

Eh, he pointed out that anybody who can do ASCII games can play this. Might be a bot, maybe a lurker.

It never ceases to amaze me when I see ads for Cybersphere.  I found it on a random search for new MUDs.  In the year 2000.  And it was already being hailed as remade, when they went through a big pro-RP kick and booted all the player-killers out.  I tried to play it, but the tutorial was borked and the mods, went I could even get them, were unhelpful.

I tried it again like five years ago.  The tutorial was different, but borked beyond playability again, and the website had not been changed by one iota save for dumping the old shockwave intro.

Who knows, maybe I'll give it another shot, to mark another decade online.

I played it last in...2008, I think. The mods were still pretty unhelpful. They certainly were not encouraging RP, whatever the CS site claims.

... as far as bad mods went, Presidente was particularily annoying, IIRC.

I played this game for a couple years, in the 2000, 2001 time frame. RP was enforced. Once there was a dispute about wheither I used OOC information to take a hit out on someone, they decided I did and I got thrown in a cell for a week.

I decided I had to play it when I connected as a guest and was standing outside a bar with a Humvee pulled up, locked its guns on some other player and opened fire. The guy managed to dive inside the bar before being blown away.

The "no history, less points" type character was something kind of new when I quit playing. The game was plagued with oldbies and feeders... good luck making anything of yourself as a new character.

If you are going to play a MUD, why not play a post apoc/RPish one with a messed up space station and vehicals and big guns?

Looking for something else, came across this thread, and I had a major deja vu rush, and, well, you'll see why when you click it.

 ???

If you still don't see it, compare the first posts.

Haha.
Methinks it's a bot, then.

On the other hand, the Snall guy who posted that original has gone on to be an actual member, postan in real threads and everything.  Still here even.

Even the misspelling of "play" in the last sentence is the same. Also, that wasn't Snall's first post anyway. Is it possible he had his account hacked into or something?

The only thing I thought of was a bot that looked for something it wanted to advertise in a forum, find the first post of a thread on the game, copy it and post that.

Huh.  Yeah, this must be a bot, or some kind of bizarro spammer anyway.  I guess I'll lock this and let it fall back down.  I'm torn about deleting the thread...  it's a weird curiosity to be exhibited, and you guys had fun investigating and stuff.  I guess if another spammer pulls the same trick I can start deleting them.  I suppose the game sucks if they are shitting up boards with quirky robots, but maybe it's all a big misunderstanding, he he he.  Could be a viral marketing cyberpunk thing.  Like, real AI and stuff.
