It's pretty easy to get adamantine really early. I like to wait till one of my armorers/weaponsmiths hits Legendary before starting to use it though. No point in wasting it to make normal quality stuff.

Well if you remove the [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE] tag from dwarves I think they have like 2-4 children each time they give birth. And if you get enough mothers up on the pillars you can probably get a good waterfall going.
Ashes are technically fire-safe.

Honestly, I try to get to it pretty early.  In this fort, I mined down to it within the first year, and after tapping one (of about 3-5 veins, haven't explored all yet) partially, I have over 90 wafers to work with.  I don't see it as all that precious, tbh, considering there's so damn much of it if you mine properly.

It's not technically "raw adamantine" until you mine it, and it seems the space elevator can't be mined...
