This is a caged GOD... So what!?
« on: July 18, 2010, 02:30:24 pm »

How do I tame random animals. I try to do it in my kannels but there is nothing i can do. Its like it's saying 'You sucker. I aint doin nothin for you!!!'

And I'm not talking about just exotic stuff. I'm talking about the stuff that you get in cage traps.

ok, using the best reading skills my body could muster, im assuming that your trying to tame either: animals you caught in cage traps, like deer and groundhogs or your trying to tame animals that you caught in animal traps, like squirrels and lizards

which animals are you trying to tame?

many annimals that live in your local biodome are exotic. So what annimals are you trying to tame? Or are these small annimals if so you should select the tame small animal option this does not give you any choise in what you want tamed.

Animals you buy from traders are tame.

Please don't bring Pauly Shore into this.

I was really hoping you'd managed to catch a God (associated with fortresses and mountains or whatever) in a cage somehow.

If the cages are still in the animal stockpile, you'll have to build them first.
b - j - <enter> - x - (select cage with animal inside)

If they are exotic you might need to apply some df engineering first. afaik the Dungeon Master is still bugged and won't appear.
Change all Pet-Exotic tags in the raws to Pet, or use DFConfig. http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2563

I'd like to point out that this is wrong - it is entirely possible (and very likely required) for an animal to be tamed while its cage is sitting in an animal stockpile.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Not required.  You can tame an animal in a cage, as long as the dwarf can reach the cage.  I often build the cage just to move it close to the kennels, but it's an optional step.

out of curiousity, can elk be tamed? I've caught about 2-3 of them in my cage traps.
If they can't be tamed, then how do I designate them for the butcher?

Only tamed animals can be slaughtered at a butcher shop. Others don't go quietly, and need to be helped along by hunters or military first.

The OP might be trying to directly train the wild animals into war hunting Xs. Make sure to tame them into regular domestic animals first using the kennel's "Tame large animal" command.

My caged deer can't be tamed without hacking the raws, so I'm pretty sure elk can't be either.
