Conquer on Contact
« on: July 18, 2010, 11:25:28 am »

http://www.conqueroncontact.com/

I followed a link saying that this game would destroy your life.

Well, it's a pretty fast paced for a browser strategy game, without any of the stupid fluff that goes along with the genre most of the time.  Sit on + tiles to increase the size of your army while making yourself more vulnerable in the meantime, move to - tiles to slowly shrink your army but defend yourself, skip around to jackpot tiles for an instant boost (or lurk nearby while they slowly grow), and chase down other players to conquer them, stealing some of their army and teleporting them somewhere else on the field.

Griefing is a lot harder than you'd think, because just moving costs a certain % of your army: Big players aren't going to chase you all over the place, but you might not want to walk right past them...

Each turn is, like, 12 seconds long, and you can auto-move to tiles that are far away.  Like I said, fast-paced...though when there's not much to do, you might want a book (or alternately, if you're reading, you might as well have the game up).

As a general rule, I don't play this kind of web game.  But I think B12ers would enjoy it.  I'm Traveller on there (you don't need to register to play--it just gives you a random name, which you can change if you do decide to register).

Do be warned that if you want to go make breakfast, you oughtta check the whole-map survey for a couple turns to make sure nobody's headed your way...and then hop onto a -2 or something, just to be safe.  Minus squares don't actually hurt you all that much to camp out on; I see high-level players sit on a -1.5 or -2 instead of going into the safe area.

Also, I should clarify exactly how army strength works.  Your army size changes slowly over time, but its effective strength changes faster based on what square you're on.  Let's take three armies, Adam, Betty, and Chad.  Each of them has a size of 1000.  Adam is on a -2.5 square.  Betty is on a +2.0 square.  Chad is on a +0.5 square.

Adam's army strength is 2500:  If you're on a negative square, your unit strength is multiplied by the square's absolute value.
Betty's army strength is 500:  If you're on a positive square, your unit strength is divided by the square's value.
Chad's army strength is an unmodified 1000.  If the absolute value of your modifier is 1.0 or less, nothing happens to your army strength.

Whenever you get into a fight, you always use your army's strength from the previous turn.  So if Chad is on his 0.5, and he attacks Adam on Adam's -2.5, Adam wins easily.  However, if both Adam and Chad move onto the same blank square (no multiplier), Adam still wins.  The modifiers of your new square don't matter until all conquering in the new turn is done.

Oh yeah...and +squares slowly lose their bonuses over time.  They'll be refreshed as the game progresses, but don't be surprised if your nice shiny +3.5 turns into a +2.0 over the course of many turns.  If your +square is adjacent to other +squares, though, your square will drain from THOSE first before it loses its own value.

I like it. Strategic thinking plays off. I just took out a player who was stronger than me by using a chokepoint with a +5.5 tile. I'm now camping a jackpot there. Its a great spot. I'm not sure the # 1 guy could get me there.

Better description:

+ tiles are all you can eat buffets. While you are on them, you get fatter.
- tiles are toilets. Every turn on them, you are pooing out your fatness. BUT the bathrooms all have reinforced walls, from puny 0.1s to steel -7s.

Jackpots are...steroids or something. Maybe really fatty burgers sent from God himself?

And then you have contests where you ram people with your fatty stomach. Whoever is smaller ends up puking up their fatness, which you then eat to get stronger.

Woo!

(This is all Toady Two's fault for saying "Om nom nom" when getting a jackpot.

I was just besieged by Sowelu, he was after the lands I risked everything for. Having lost many men on the journey his army was still greater than mine, luckily I had the advantage of high ground but was loosing men by the second. Boredom shined on him and fortune on me, he left and I ran for the hills.

This game is oddly engrossing. That little exchange with Sowelu being one of my favourite moments so far.

Is it just me or does it take a LONG time to refresh, and often has refresh problems?

just you.

I have made two conquests so far. One was with a guy named Kerry, which I won after he tried to run past my chokepoint. Another was when I took out a newbie that was too close to my 120 jackpot
