Shield material - does it effect the shield's "goodness"?
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:20:37 am »

Question in title. What advantages does, for example, a steel shield have to an iron or wooden shield?

I honestly hadn't thought about it til you brought it up. Shields are used to deflect attacks more than anything else, so technically speaking the material shouldn't matter. It's hard to say for sure since on my arena tests, armor did 99% of the attack-deflection, with a shield-block happening every now and then.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

Not yet, but surely once Toady puts in material damage/degradation, what the shield is made of will matter.

So, currently, what you're juggling is the shield's weight versus its effectiveness.

So a wooden shield is just as good as an adamantine, steel, or bronze shield?

Good to know. I got the impression from the wiki that material was important.

I remember reading something about the shield being able to block dragon fire and such... would a wood one still be just as good in that case?

That's an affirmative.

Good to know, I'd always assumed that the material of a shield mattered. Now I shall only worry about shield material for decorative purposes.

It _might_ matter. That is to say, that quality may be a factor, but not necessarily the material. Specifically, a shield that weighs less might be more effective and a shield that is higher quality might work better. Therefore, an artifact adamantine shield might be better than a wooden one.

Shields apart from their blocking effects also act as an additional armor for the hand wielding them, and the material pays role here.
