' You are dead.' you simply tell him, nodding towards his body, a deep gash in his stomach and a crossbow bolt sticking out of his shoulder. ' I am here to escort you the afterlife.' The terror on the man's face becomes even greater, if even possible.

' N.. no, this c..cannot be! Y... you lie! This is witchcraft, nothing more!' he begins to regain his confidence. This is not good. If you don't act quickly, he might escape - or attempt to attack you. You could try forcing him to the afterlife, but the Bureaucracy doesn't approve of that, because it can destroy the soul in the process.

Dammit has none of you any idea of the norse Mythology?

I am no witch noble warrior! I am a shield maiden of Odin, sent from him to bring you to Valhalla itself! Though it is still you choice. You can either stay here and fight this battle again and again wandering the lands as a restless spirit never seeing Valhalla, Ragnarök or the recreation of the universe or you follow me and you will be judged upon if you are either worthy of Odins Halls or if you were a coward in your life and cast into the depths of Hel itself!

' Uhh... yes, I've been sent by the gods to save you from the witch. Just take my hand, and I'll guide you through this illusion.' you attempt to reassure him.

It seems to work. The man looks thoughtful, then nods slowly. You look through his mind and see what gods he worships.
Ah yes, the Essenceborn. You pick the first name that you find in his mind. Iacea, the Master of the Deep Sea.

' You have served Iacea well. Allow him to help you, now.'

The man nods again, and steps closer, relaxing visibly. You take his hand and...
Ice, stretching infinitely, while an endless blizzard rages overhead. Massive shapes pulsing with malevolence move slowly across the landscape, hundreds of the damned chained to their arms. Flocks of white birds follow them, feasting on the flesh of the damned, who cannot move or speak.

Well. Looks like this guy didn't exactly live a good life. Upon witnessing this landscape, he falls on his knees and begins sobbing, but you are already fading away...

You return to the woods and smile as you sense your superior acknowledging your success. The pull is still there, so you let yourself go with it.
This time you are taken into a city made completely of white marble and gold, sitting upon a lone mountaintop in the sea. The marble is too well cut and the stones too well placed; this is a city of divine handiwork. It is night.
You quickly find your target; two towers connected by a bridge. On the bridge lay a dozen bodies; only a few of them human. The battle here is being fought by some kind of half-man, half-animal creatures and humans. You find what you seek in the middle of it all, a human impaled by a spear.
He is just getting up.

You are surprised to see two dog-like creatures moving through the fighting masses; fellow Guides.

The dead noble begins crying as soon as he sees you. ' I am dead, then? I shall not grieve for my fate, but the fate of my people. We have failed to close the portal. Our pride will be our downfall.' he pauses, looking around him ' I have to stay for a while.' he says.

That's a no; staying too long would make a ghost of him, and he needs to move on.

You hear a dog's howl from the back of the crowd, but ignore it. Your target is here.

Unfortunately, he wasn't a worshipper of the norse pantheon, so that wouldn't have worked anyhow. Also, you really, really don't want to piss of the Valkyries.
You work for the Bureaucracy, no matter where you originally hail from.

(Pantheons and other groups are in the second post, in Relations)

ah sorry then i must apologize i thought because of our looks and our speciality, i thought that we would belong to the Norse Mythology Valkyries...well then...

Sorry warrior but the time is short! If you stay too long you will be turned into a ghost and must wander these dimensions for eternity. And Secondly, do you see those dog like creatures over there? They are allies of the things you fought here. If they catch you they willturn your life and your soul into an eternnity of pain...!

((Well, we could've used to, but the Underworld Bureaucracy has taken over all Psychopomp jobs, and not even the Valkyries really work for the Norse pantheon anymore))

' There is no time to waste!' you say, pointing at the direction of the dogs. ' If those things catch you, your soul will never gain rest. They will feast on you for all of eternity. I understand your wish to see the destiny of your city, but you will do no good to them in the maw of one of those creatures.'

The man begins to look worried. Good. ' You will never get...' you continue, but he interrupts you, pointing back at the battle. ' Those things?'
You take a look.
Shit.

Above the slow motion battle, one of the beastmen is twisting and lashing out in the air, held in place by invisible chains. Red lightning runs up his body, entering his body through the eyes. Laughter booms throughout the city. The fighters do not see any of this.
You recognize this scene from your training. Wraith.

Nobody knows how these things are created. It is believed that an angered soul, if left alone for too long, will be attacked by some unknown presence and sometimes taken over by them.

One of the dogs leaps through the crowd to you, terror in it's eyes. You hear the other dog-creature whimpering somewhere below the Wraith.

Standard Bureaucracy policy is to destroy Wraiths before they gain full strenght, which would mean attacking right now. The dead noble is still there, however, and ready to be guided through. You're not sure if you can take on a Wraith. Wraith's are killed by old Guides, like Azrael and Hermes.

Guide him as fast as possible and then prepare for combat with our claymore!

After guiding him away we should rally those dog things and attack that thing. If it kills both the dogs, RUN LIKE HELL!

Get him to help you kill the wraith. Unless it's against policy (to endanger a newly dead, that is), in which case bring him back and inform a senior Psychopomp. Then fight it.

I don't think that is wise to let him fight it

Aw. You're probably right. I think it would be best to get someone stronger than ourselves to fight it, though. Or at least a few allies of equal strength (besides the dogs, who are probably going to die/vanish/croak/whatever soon).

Tell him that the creatures he was fighting were spirits who didn't pass on, and if he doesn't go with you right now he may find himself back in the battle on the other side. Once you deliver him (assuming that works), immediately inform your superiors that you have a wraith at the site of your last job and request backup or further orders.

Remember, you're bureaucracy, not a hero per se. Bureaucracy never does anything without orders.

No time to waste; you grab the dead noble and catch a quick glance of a mountain of some sort before returning to the battlefield. Bolts of red lightning arc across the battlefield, cutting through the still-alive fighters who collapse holding their heads. They head for the second dog, which crashes onto you trying to get away. You grab it before it can run.

' We need to take this thing down, now!' you shout, but the dog-creature just keeps whimpering in terror. It's not gonna be of any use anytime soon.
' Look... tell the Bureaucracy what's happening here. Tell them to send help, okay?'
The dog slips from your grasp and disappears mid-jump; you're not sure if it will follow your orders.

The Wraith, seeing everyone else has fled the field, turns it's attention to you. Another bolt of energy surges forward, but you quickly bat it aside with your claymore and start running towards it. The Wraith snarls, and, in the bat of an eyel, is right in front of you, claws ready. You try to bring the claymore up, but it sends you flying with another lightning bolt. You get up in mid-air and grip your claymore tighter. The Wraith looks faintly surprised, if anything can be told from it's nigh-expressionless face.
It moves confidently, starting to speak something in a language you don't understand. Before it can finish, you leap forward, claymore aimed at it's neck.
The Wraith laughs again, swiftly moving out of the way. You land behind it and spin around as fast you can. The claymore cuts a deep gash across it's back, sending it tumbling forward in surprise.

You know this is the best chance you have and charge after it. This time your blade connects with a shifting shield of lightning, but your second strike already breaks it and finds it's mark in the flesh of the Wraith behind it.
The Wraith's wounds leak some kind of black gas, but it doesn't seem overly bothered by them yet. Both you charge forward. Claymore meets claws in the air, and cuts straight through. It doesn't stop there.

The Wraith falls over, head cleaved in two and gushing more gas into the air. The energy filling it's body begins to lash out wildly, then disappears completely.
The Wraith is dead.

You find the body of the first dog in the middle of the battle, unseen by any of the combatants. It's head has been separated from the body, probably by those claws.
You take the body in your arms and head back to the realm of the Bureaucracy.

As you enter the cavern-like world, a swarm of Psychopomps surrounds you. They're all clad in full combat gear and shifted into fearsome forms. You spot the second dog sitting atop a rock some distance away. They all talk at the same time, but you gather they want to know what happened.
' I got it.' you simply say and watch with satisfaction as the worry on their faces turns into relief and surprise. They cheer a bit, and then disappear wherever. You can guess what they're thinking; not their problem anymore.

The dog-creature comes over, quite obviously ashamed. ' Uhh... thanks for... returning his body. I kinda panicked back there. I'm, uhh, Erres. Yeah... yeah, uhh, see ya.'
He quickly disappears into the bowels of the cavern.

The last person to come talk to you is your superior, and as always, you are startled by his appearance. He likes to take the form of an enormous cloud of insects, for some reason.
' Good work there, Yggda. Not many Guides can defeat a Wraith on their own. I... this is quite troubling. These past two weeks, the amount of Wraiths appearing has been steadily increasing. We...' he pauses, as if just realizing perhaps it was not so wise to speak to you about such matters.
' Well, it doesn't need to bother you. Just continue your work.'

Interesting... you'd like to know more, but perhaps it would be for the best if you'd just let the pull take you again. Also, you feel quite tired after that fight, and resting here for a while sounds pretty good.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(Blegh, sorry if seems rushed or anything, I'm not feeling too well right now.)
