Daenar, congrats! That is a harrowing tale of Orb retrieval! Such moments are what make Crawl so lovely.

Never tried Nemelex so far, i always heard it is easy but isn't it relying it a bit too much on luck with the blind cards selection in the beginning[?]

Not really; you've got no need to use cards until you've got some piety up -- and piety is ridiculously easy to gain with Nemelex, especially for Sprigs, Mummies, Vampires, Trolls, anything that has whole categories of items they can't use, which makes perfect sacrifice fodder. You basically offer up every single thing you can't or won't use and piety goes up, up, up. Then you just draw two on anything to ID the deck and promptly throw away any destruction decks. Legendary or ornate summons will demolish pretty much everything your character can't for a long, long time.

After that, you basically just keep an eye on the guide. Nemelex will give you plenty of cards as you sacrifice and chew through the simple/ornate ones in your spare time (to boost piety and train evocations). Sprigs are perfect for nemelex worship, since you can outrun anything that mis-summons; and as your piety and evocations increases, that effect generally lessens, I think. Can almost always just summon more to deal with the hostiles, heh.

Anyway, the luck factor involved is pretty trivial. The cards themselves are so flipping ridiculous, even the minor amount of luck involved is generally easily mitigated by, well, more cards. And you'll be drowning in them after a while. My SpEn's gone through probably 20 or so decks, has eight in its inventory, and there's probably another ten or so destruction decks just laying around the dungeon. It's good stuff.

I just learnt to play Nemelex a few days ago in tourney sprint, using various Spriggans (the spatial vortices only killed one character so far) - the summons decks let me kill Mara without much risk. I haven't had a problem using destruction decks yet, perhaps I've just been lucky so far..

The biggest risk with destruction decks is the Torment card. If your character is affected by this (e.g. ghouls are immune), you need to be prepared to deal with it or avoid the card via triple-draw, stack-five, etc. Another risk is area effect e.g. toxic radiance or fire/lightning blast. I use destruction only on enemies which are far enough away that I can flee if necessary.

If you don't want to waste cards using peek to id the decks, just make sure to draw the first card with an enemy in sight and not standing on a dungeon feature like stairs. Nemelex will be disappointed if you waste a card by drawing a Destruction without an enemy to fire at, or Trowel while standing on something that prevents creation of a portal/altar.

Deck of Wonders/Changes can be very useful but also dangerous. Triple draw recommended especially for low level characters. Again do not stand on a stair. Portal can make a treasure trove, bazaar, bailey, etc.

Standing near a stair however is a good idea so you can flee easily. Especially if you summon a hostile...

Congrats Daenar!

When used properly, you can kill anything with legendary decks of summoning. Antaeus? Stung to death by a swarm of wasps. Cerebov? Add hasted bone dragons to the mix. If you don't mind losing a level due to the Pain card, getting instant-killed by the Spark card, or getting tormented while fighting something stronger than a roach, then decks of destruction aren't that bad.  ;)

Edit:

If you don't want to waste cards using peek to id the decks, just make sure to draw the first card with an enemy in sight and not standing on a dungeon feature like stairs. Nemelex will be disappointed if you waste a card by drawing a Destruction without an enemy to fire at, or Trowel while standing on something that prevents creation of a portal/altar.

Peek at Two only wastes 1 card and it's much safer than blindly drawing a Shuffle card from an unidentified wonder deck. And you don't lose any piety for disappointing Nemelex, you just don't gain any piety for drawing that card. If you have max piety it doesn't matter much if he gets miffed.

Well, my summoner's career is over. Elf:7 is no place to get careless.

Breakdown of my mistakes:
1) Should have summoned monstrosities first. I was finding solitary elves in the halls, and confusing/stabbing them without backup. Then I miscast Intoxication, and took an iron shot from a deep elf annihilator. Brought me from 98 to 35 hp. Using minions would have prevented this problem. (I did have Deflect Missiles up.)

2) I tried to blink away from him, but the powerful magic interfered with my blink. I should have known that. Fortunately Deflect Missiles saved me from his next volley: a crystal spear. Next I summoned a demonic horde, and some horrible things. Those took care of the annihilator.

3) I had low HP and should have left immediately. Instead I stayed around to watch my beasts kill more confused elves. Well, sadly, a demonologist who became unconfused while out of my sight then summoned a Shadow Fiend, which killed me with a single bolt of cold.

When I'm drinking tonight, I'll lift a glass in honor of this fallen summoner and his intoxicating ways.

I did kill Boris twice, so I get the Moose and Squirrel banner!

Edit: I probably also locked down the DESu high score, since it doesn't seem like a popular combo.

Ooh nice, huge congrats Daenar!

There actually is a string of first-time victors now, like I hoped before :) Also, 3 wins and #1 slot on the combos for the Blacksmiths, I couldn't ask for more, nice job guys! Let's keep this up, we're even getting almost close to the Bay12Dwarfs score last year.

EDIT: Whyyy did I lose this guy? This makes me sad, I've never got this good equipment in the early game before. Two really good artifact rings, a nice weapon of vampirism and a guardian spirit amulet (with one of the rings boosting MP) as a Trog worshipper. Teaches me to go to unknown minibraches and playing at work I guess. Got a pretty secure high score though and I must say Vampires and Berserkers actually feel like a good match.

Recently i lost a Mummy Chaos Knight of Makhleb that was very promising, as i found on D:1 a regeneration ring that was doing wonders against anything thrown at that mummy, and a nice mace with some good bonuses.
And stupidly i forgot that the mummy was already assigned to Makhleb by default and took Fedhas that altar i found on D:3.

The answer was an insta death from Makhleb punishment, as my mummy just being level 3 had not enough health yet to take the damages of the forced miscat effect that was inflicted.

Gee!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And... and I was so ridiculously lucky in this game! My farthest character by a buttload. Stunning, really, as I played him in a completly stupid fashion (let's alienate silf muna! Then xom half the game! Then ditch him for a mostly useless god!). All that god angering stuff led me to 7!! abyss trips.
Bat form saved me like... 15 times? Ennemies kept missing him, and things kept going his way. Oh well. It's spriggan enchanter time.

And where are all those jelly kills from???

Huzzah! My very first rune! (and I believe the very first for the soapers as well). Had to snatch it from the annoying frozen fortress in swamp. The wiki said nothing about having to walk your way through frozen vapour, along with all the hydras :(. I dropped all my potions, equipped a ring of ice and ice resistance and stormed on in. At first I was very afraid of the hydras, using up a wand of fire and some Trog summons for covering my butt. But then I discovered that I could one-shot them into steam, so it wasn't much of a problem.

Here is my dwarf, for any interested. Absolutely love him, such a tank.

Congratulations for the rune !

Thank ya. On another note, I've just identified 2 scrolls of aquirement in my stash. Any idea what I should get? I already have a really good cloak, some pretty good plate, and an arsenal of weapons so big I don't know what to do with them all.

You could try Jewelry as apparently if you have already identified a lot of different ring/amulet, you'll get then more chances of the jewelry obtained being an artifact.
But there's always some chances you get something disapointing anyways, happens everytime to me when i try a scroll of acquirement :D

No, jewelry acquirement giving randarts is not affected by how many kinds are ID'd. It's a flat 28.5% chance for any ring or amulet being a randart except for hunger and innacurracy which have a 92% chance of being randarts. I still recommend acquiring jewelry unless you really need something else such as gold for a shop, a staff, armor, fruit if you worship Fedhas, or some other circumstance I can't think of.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
