Greatly sorry to my teammates for my inactivity due to things in RL.

Hopefully I will get to play more soon!

EDIT: Ahahaha! Posted to a wrong thread there. :P

Anyway, I can't seem to get past the early game. It's kind of boring playing through the start over and over  again, leading to me not paying attention as much as I should, leading to having to start over again. A vicious cycle of really stupid deaths.

Can't find the hidden gold room in the sprint Orc mines, would somebody care to help me out?

In the game I won it was a 2x1 area at the upper left of Orc. I used disintegration to get in, not sure if there was a secret door. There was around 1500 gold in there.

I had that happen to me too before the tournament. I broke it by playing a good character overly safe. Throwing rocks and weapons at everything before they got to me. Always drinking a potion or teleporting away when there was even a small chance to die. Never staying in a branch or level too long when there was something that could kill me.

Then when I started feeling pretty good about my character, I broke this rule and went after Nergalle in Crypt with a shining new axe of holy wrath. So I died.

Here's my level 18 deep elf summoner.

I've been waltzing through with a strategy of Demonic Horde, mixed with some ugly things. There are usually 30-50 demons on the screen during one of my fights. Summon Horrible Things has very nicely dealt with any major threats. I just stand around the corner and let the tentacled monstrosities do their thing.

Any spell suggestions from the experts? Borgnjor's Revivification seems popular, despite the permanent loss of 2-11 hp - better than being dead, of course, but when my deep elves die, it's usually from something that did 60+ hp in one hit.

Phase shift? Lee's Rapid Deconstruction? I'm trying to get Sif Muna to give me more Air books, because I really want Swiftness and Air Strike.

Good ones I see: Sublimation of Blood is ace, especially since you've got gourmand and can mostly stay engorged. Haunt is supposed to be kickin' -- it smite targets, iirc, which is a major advantage. Um. Flight, you want flight. You've got controlled tele from ring, which is good -- it + blink is generally a pretty solid short-term escape option. You might want alistair's for a while, so long as you can forget it when you stop running into natural critters. Regeneration seems to be common in late-game casters, from what I've been speccing, but you''ve got a ring, which might be enough -- they do stack, though.

That's all I got, heh. Keep a serious eye out for deflect/repel missiles, that's probably the biggest problem you've got right now. Swiftness would be major boon, o'course. Remember its flight synergy!

My little Spriggan is doing very good so far, cleaned D:1 to D:18 , cleaned Hive, cleaned Orc Mines and cleaned Lair (though when i did i had no way to fight the demons of the hidden room in Lair:8, so i ran away but now with Shadow Creatures i'll get back to them soon).

After even besting Chuck Norris that level 16 Spriggan feels invincible, meaning he will die a stupid death soon.
But even with a stupid death, that little Spriggan added some points for the team with ghosts and new uniques added to my kill list, so it would not be a complete waste.

On the bad news, i was aiming for Jiyva and in everything i explored, there is no Jiyva altar to be seen, exactly the opposite of when i don't aim for that altar and seem to find it very easily.

Is it possible that Jiyva altar appear nowhere in the regular (not branches) Dungeon ?

But tons of thanks to Shadow Creatures, in deeper floors, you can build an army of very good monsters.
Well if you are not unlucky luck and waste your magic point in summoning shadow rats and bats.

You have Summon Horrible Thing. You've practically won already.  :P Don't forget to haste your tentacled monstrosities in battle! Keep repel missiles active at all the times, since you can easily be killed with such low HP.

Nice spells:

- Sublimation of Blood
- Flight
- Alistair's Intoxication
- Phase Shift

Yes.

Robsoie, I thought of you when I found an altar to Jiyva on D:3 one game. Is your Jiyva obsession just a way to get a free rune?

It seems that a hasted very ugly thing is also a force to be reckoned with...

What's so great about Fly, by the way? Trap avoidance? It doesn't avoid Zot traps, which are the only super bad ones. I'm a bit afraid of using Fly habitually, because I'm afraid I'll let it wear off and not notice that I'm above deep water. Game over.

No, the obsession is to get the royal jelly status with the highest faith rank, so i can get those free high end jellies helper when something hit me for 25% of health, basically what every monsters does after floor 9/10.
Quote
While at “Royal Jelly” status (maximum piety), hits that take 25% or more of your maximum HP will generate friendly, high-end jellies, similar to the effect of The royal jelly.

I can think of lots of situation in which my character died and that could have used such free spawn powerfull ally as meat shield.

And talking of death
Quote
that level 16 Spriggan feels invincible, meaning he will die a stupid death soon.
And i was right, Dungeon:19 a skeletal stone giant, i confused it and creature summoned a skeletal stone giant.
Went in contact for the kill, as i have a very good stabbing level it should have been piece of cake.
Well, let's say that it did not work, stabbed nothing at all and the confused skeletal stone giant instead of hitting the other stone giant or just going in a random direction hit me twice.
1st hit, more than half my health, second hit Spriggan dead, couldn't get away after 1st hit as i had pressed the key to attack 3 times already, the lag just made me see the health going down hit by hit.

I knew the game at some point would do that , ignoring completely that my high EV could have helped to avoid a confused skeletal stone giant punch and kill my character just like this.

Re: Flight -- Trap avoidance, stealth boost, fairly massive increase in weight tolerance for inventory, and if paired with swiftness, an additional movement speed boost. It's levitation + controlled flight, for a fairly low mana cost. It's quite difficult to miss it fading out, too, and you can adjust things in the options file to make it a bit more blunt that you need to recast it. I still need to get around to having it start to fade interrupt auto-explore, heh. Anyway, all in all, Flight's just really useful. My lil'SpEn's had it up since I managed to learn it.

Re: Other god for Robsoie. I recommend Nemelex. I'd probably recommend Nemelex for everyone, in every situation, at this point. Those freaking cards are ridiculous.

Also, that particular death was pretty avoidable; you've got to be really, really careful with command overflow on CAO -- ignoring it's gotten me killed a few times. Generally, I've just been getting in the habit of making sure to space out how often I give commands, something like one every second (and waiting for the display to update) instead of chaining a few together. Using space to clear message spam and % (or anything that doesn't take time or have the potential to cause you to do something) to make sure your command has gone through is a good idea, too.

Never tried Nemelex so far, i always heard it is easy but isn't it relying it a bit too much on luck with the blind cards selection in the beginning ?

As luck and me are 2 different entities, as proves again my just finished Xom Chaos Knight run
Code: [Select]

You could see an orange demon, a hellwing, a white imp, a lemure, a midge, a shadow imp, a gnoll zombie and 2 ufetubi.
that XOM just summoned around my low level character, and the logical conclusion before the teleport could do its effect :

Quote
Slain by an orange demon (4 damage)
             ... summoned by Xom
... on Level 3 of the Dungeon.

Quick update all - another win for the Blacksmiths and my first win!  (I think that is three 'first wins' for Blacksmith members!)

I wanted to grab more runes with my DEFE, but I couldn't get the resistance combinations I needed with the gear I had (needed to swap out constantly) and I had picked up a nasty degenerate 2 mutation and could not find a cure mutation potion for the life of me.  I believe I found one the entire game, which is the one I happened to quaff-ID.

Anyway, after some scary exploration of Tomb and some of the Hells, I decided just to get my first win and work on the other branches as I get better as a player.

Zot:5 -
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All told, it was a lot of fun!  Here is the dump for anyone interested: http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Sildraith/morgue-Sildraith-20100820-011712.txt

Good luck during the rest of the tournament all - hopefully the wins will continue!
