So here's my level 10 Mountain Dwarf fighter, that I'm super happy with (mainly because a few minutes before I saved I identified what kind of mace has been sitting in my inventory). Suggestions, comments? Any skills I should be focusing on? This is my first character that's made it this far, and I want to make sure I'm not messing something up.

Leave Maces & Flails on if you want to use a two-handers. You should probably use a more accurate/faster weapon until your armor and weapon skills increase.

Oops, i mistook the guaranteed damage reduction for the minimum damage dealt, the formula is for for the guaranteed damage reduction, so in my example with 20 damages, you AC will block between 6 and apparently the complete damage.

Suddenly it is a lot better as it is less dependant on luck then :D

Question, my kobold is currently following Sif Muna.
I am in Lair:8 in front of the entrance to Slime Pit.

Next to that entrance, there is an altar to Jiyva.
I read on the wiki the effect of abandonning Sif Muna

Code: [Select]
If you leave (voluntarily or not) Sif Muna, your penance counter will be set to 50 (quite high!), but no (immediate) negative events will happen. While under penance (for leaving him), Sif Muna will sometimes punish you (about once every 2000 turns).

Possible punishments are:

    * 20%: Temporary decreases your Intelligence by up to 20%
    * 30%: Confuses you for 1d10 + 2 turns
    * 20%: Suffer a random divination miscast effect
    * 20%: Have you MP pool set to 0
    * 10%: Sets the remaining duration of all magic enchantments affecting you to 1 turn (2 turns for Levitation).

In addition, every time you cast a spell, there's a 2.5% chance that the failure rate will be increased by your remaining penance in % (in this case, there's only a 8% chance that your penance will actually be reduced by 1, unlike other punishments).

Do you think with the current status of my kobold that this kind of punishment is bearable ?

I was watching you play. You're doing great. Don't anger Sif. His wrath lasts up to 100,000 turns. Why did you turn off Traps & Doors, Dodging, and Fighting?

Noooooo :(

Of course now I have to fall down a shaft 4 levels, and land right in front of a unique. I managed to teleport away with 4 hits remaining, but was then shocked by an electric eel. Humbug.

I always thought of Sif Muna as being the one decidedly female member of the Crawl pantheon aside from Elyvilon.  What changed that?

Jiyva seems to switch back and forth (and in-between) at whim.  All the others have seemed to be male.

2nd win. This was by far the easiest win I ever had. Nemelex gave me way too many summoning decks. Cleared the Shoals by spamming decks, cleared the Snake Pit by spamming decks, and I just waited several thousand turns for my last rune. Zot was easy, since I didn't get hit by anything.

Congratulations! Good trick for the abyss rune, I might have to try that. Abyss is Really Boring. Do you mean in Zot you just snuck past all the monsters with Stealth?

My current character seems plenty strong and well equipped enough to collect all 15. That's if I don't mess up again...

Back into the dungeon for my Kobold Fire Elementalist after nearly cleaning Lair, after killing 2 death yaks, i saw from far into a forest vault in Lair:8 a Dire Elephant sleeping, not being able to see the whole room i couldn't say if he was alone, so i walked back and left that room alone.

I remember "normal" Elephant in a previous game that were really strong, don't really want to know how much stronger the Dire variant can be.

I began to clear Dungeon:14 but faced a pack of centaur and centaur warriors, fortunately i could had them into a corridor, as one  centaur warrior was able to nearly killing me, it was a close fight that got me wasting my heal wound potions to survive and a few blink scroll. Really thanks to mephitic clouds that helped survive this encounter.

Later in Dungeon:14 i was attacked by an Unseen horror in an open room, with absolutely no way to know where it was (at least in a corridor i could have blind shot some wands, had to teleport out of there as my health was falling fast.

In another zone of this floor i saw a dragon roaming around, fortunately he has not noticed me so i walked away. As i was waiting near the stair, i saw a minotaur coming and attacking me, fortunately a mephitic cloud and sticky flame did wonders, once killed the minotaur revealed he was "only" a shapeshifter, so maybe the dragon was him too, i sure hope.

Anyways, Dungeon:14 seems to mark a big increase in the difficulty for my kobold after cleaning Lair.

I was under the impression Sif Muna was female as well. I think Lugonu is also female, but that might just be hogwash.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

There are a couple instances on the wiki where Lugonu is referred to as a "she"...  Personally, I always thought of Lugonu as more of a formless smoke-like entity, too preoccupied with being a dick to bother with gender.

So what exactly are the effects that the skills have? They don't seem to be listed anywhere that I can find. I mean in general I know they have you doing something better, but I don't know how much getting a rank in your weapons skill helps out, or your particular magic schools.

I do wish someone would go through and translate into plain english the actual code for various junk; knowing precisely what each level adds would aid tremendously in experience management.

I have thus far found this for weapon skills, from the wiki; it's unfortunately not centralized information. Came from at least three different pages.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ranged weapons work differently, though, to a degree. For magic skills, you'll probably have to trawl the spell success, hunger, power, and range pages to get the exact numbers involved. If you do before I do, please share :P

The gods are supposed to be genderless, but I don't like using gender-neutral pronouns.  :P Lugonu was called "Lucy" in the development stage, which is why some people refer to that god as female.

I stabbed a few groups of monsters while invisible, since I didn't want to fight them on my way back up. Only 3-4 monsters noticed me, but I was already near the Orb. Your GhFE is pretty powerful. Beware: Pan and Hell don't have many edible monsters, so you may want to bring a ton of meat rations. I'd recommend getting Haste and Apportation, so you can steal the runes.

So what exactly are the effects that the skills have? They don't seem to be listed anywhere that I can find. I mean in general I know they have you doing something better, but I don't know how much getting a rank in your weapons skill helps out, or your particular magic schools.

Search for "list of skills"

* Weapons - Mostly increases attack speed. Keep them on past 15 if you want to use two-handed weapons. Note: turn off short blades at 10 if you're using them.

* Fighting - General weapon skill. Helps with a bunch of minor things. Gives a HP boost, so it's worth increasing if you're a caster.

* Spellcasting - Overpowered. Maxing out this skill allows you to cast most spells at perfect or excellent without having any skill in their schools. Increases spell slots and reduces spell hunger as well.

Nabbed my second rune for the Miners (barnacled). Shoals 5 is fairly challenging, and I got myself into some difficult situations - I ended up using 4 haste charges, a heal wounds and a teleport scroll in an extended fight with the rune guards (who had wandered out of their room). Later on, I used up wands of disintegration and draining trying to kill a kraken, but it got away.
A notable treasure was an artifact amulet, giving +5 EV, +2 Int, and resist mutation.

Great job on that second rune !
The last Shoals floor has a bad reputation, it's great to have been able to fetch the rune from there.

I managed to kill one of those very annoying unseen horror thanks to it attacking me in a corridor and so me blind shooting with a wand of flame.
But there are 2 more unseen horrors in a lower floors and i can't seem to attract them into a corridors, wasted again healing potions as those things hit hard, so very hard.

I really need a see invisible device, will have to get in upper stages of the dungeon and hope to find something i may have missed in shop.

Iirc, you can do a ctrl-f command to check if you've missed something with a particular effect. Just searching for 'see' should pick up anything that's specifically see invisibility; 'artefact' will show all the ID'd artifacts you know of, which might have a see invis intrinsic. The find command'll check things in shops and display their price, too. S'very helpful.
