Killed in Vaults:8 by a ghost? There are gold dragons and ancient liches down there! I am thoroughly impressed! Congratulations! :P

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Demos/morgue-Demos-20100812-192254.txt

2nd win. This was by far the easiest win I ever had. Nemelex gave me way too many summoning decks. Cleared the Shoals by spamming decks, cleared the Snake Pit by spamming decks, and I just waited several thousand turns for my last rune. Zot was easy, since I didn't get hit by anything.

Explain please?

Enter the Abyss, use a Tomb card in an open area, put on an Amulet of Stasis, and wait 8,000 turns. Afterward, remove the amulet, teleport out, and wander around until the rune pops up.

Amusingly, I noticed my wizard's ghost already netted a kill -- my first ghost kill. It was an 18th level vampire summoner who had already nabbed 3 runes :D

How do you see what your ghost has done?

In other news, I found a crystal ball of seeing. The wiki says "It requires a degree of magical ability to be used reliably; otherwise it can produce unpredictable and possibly harmful results".

What kind of harmful results can I expect? Should I steer clear of using it until my evocation skill is higher?

*tips hat to Dr. Feelgood*

You've taken the lead for our team, great work on your second win!  I haven't been too successful since that first win, my best run since then ended in idiotic melee combat with the Lernaen hydra (I soooo wanted that 5 points...).

How do you see what your ghost has done?
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/tourney10/gkills.html

Then you can go to the player killed and check the morgue file, heh.

Your score also keeps track of players killed by your ghosts and gives you points for it.

On that note, does anyone know how ghosts work, exactly? If I had taken that wizard down to d:2 and kamikaze'd it on giant bats or somethin', would there have been a 25th level equivalent player ghost waltzing around the place?

From 0.5.2, so it may or may not have changed:

Ah, thank you muchly for both of those. So I shouldn't be too worried about using the orb, so long as I'm alone and can afford to be confused for a while. It can suck away all my int for all I care heh. As for the ghosts, mine has apparently killed two people. Is there a (simple) way to look a players non-recent deaths? My ghost doesn't show up as the killer in either of their recent game lists.

Congratulations for your 2nd win Dr.Feelgood, that's always impressive to see how easy it seems when someone else tells you how he won, just for you to spectacularly die in Dungeon:1 killed by a hobgoblin trying to imitate those dungeon crawl masters lol.

About the ghosts, i'm a bit surprised to see that my ghosts killed 6 characters.

I believe those certainly were the various level 9/10 troll berserkers that i played with, those trolls were packing a huge punch in hand to hand (i always tried to get strength 30 with leveling) and had access to berserk getting more damages, most of my trolls were using those huge spiked clubs too that already deal large damage by themselves.

Ghosts being more powerfull than the living versions, i really recommend to avoid getting in hand to hand combat against a Robsoie ghost and just shoot them from afar, usually my trolls never had much elemental resistance, so i imagine the ghosts did not gained more.

Sif Muna has been nice with me, though i was hoping for some blink/teleport book as i progressively needs a way to have a sure escape (and why i'm training a bit translocation for now) as my teleportation scrolls are less and less numerous.

Anyways, happy to reach level 15.
I think that's the highest so far any of my characters reached on this tournament.

I really hope i will not be stupid and die recklessly, i think this little kobold has potential.

How does one get a text file of their current character, like what Robsoie did to show his Kobold? I went to my rawdata folder but it doesn't seem to contain anything like a current file. I think I finally have a real character (my first to get above level 8 ), that I'm really happy with. I'd like to show it to get some suggestions, and make sure I'm not doing anything stupid with it.

Aha, totally looked over it in the manual. Thanks.

So here's my level 10 Mountain Dwarf fighter, that I'm super happy with (mainly because a few minutes before I saved I identified what kind of mace has been sitting in my inventory). Suggestions, comments? Any skills I should be focusing on? This is my first character that's made it this far, and I want to make sure I'm not messing something up.

I think you should re-enable your dodging skill to improve your EV too.

According to the wiki AC depend a bit too much on luck to be reliable.
Quote
AC reduces the damage of attacks susceptible to AC by an absolute value between 0 and your current AC value
Meaning that even with an insane level of AC, you always have a chance to being hit with full damage.

And even if you're lucky and obtain a random AC number that would be superior to the damage you are receiving, it does not even block it entirely, as there is unfortunately a "guaranteed damage" that your health will always recieve.

By example, you have an enemy that put a huge blow and hit you with 20 damages.
Let's say you're lucky and your AC random number got 24 , your current max AC.

Instead of recieving 0 damage, you will recieve, according to the formula :
Code: [Select]
(base AC of body armour) * (13 + Armour skill) * (maximum damage of the attack) / 1700
meaning with your current character that the guaranteed damage you would recieve despite your random AC result of 24 on a blow for 20 damages would be
24*21*20/1700 = +/- 5.9
So you'll always recieve at least 6 minimum damages on your health for an originally 20 damaging hit.

That's why i think you should continue to train your Dodging along your Armour skill, so you have more chances to avoid entirely an attack, while keeping your AC high to have some chance to lower the damages.

EDIT : mistook minimum damage recieved and minimum damage blocked by the AC.
The 6 minimum damage is actually the minimum damage your current AC and armour skill will block on a 20 damaging hit.
That's much much better than my original understanding, as then your current AC would block from a 20 damages hit between 6 and 24.

The problem with that: dodging is useless while wearing heavy armour. I'd keep dodging turned off. Also there's a minimum guaranteed damage reduction.

"Whenever a character is hit by an attack susceptible to AC, the attack's damage is always at least reduced by an amount referred to as the guaranteed damage reduction, or GDR for short."

Oops, i mistook the guaranteed damage reduction for the minimum damage dealt, the formula is for for the guaranteed damage reduction, so in my example with 20 damages, you AC will block between 6 and apparently the complete damage.

Suddenly it is a lot better as it is less dependant on luck then :D

Question, my kobold is currently following Sif Muna.
I am in Lair:8 in front of the entrance to Slime Pit.

Next to that entrance, there is an altar to Jiyva.
I read on the wiki the effect of abandonning Sif Muna

Quote
If you leave (voluntarily or not) Sif Muna, your penance counter will be set to 50 (quite high!), but no (immediate) negative events will happen. While under penance (for leaving him), Sif Muna will sometimes punish you (about once every 2000 turns).

Possible punishments are:

    * 20%: Temporary decreases your Intelligence by up to 20%
    * 30%: Confuses you for 1d10 + 2 turns
    * 20%: Suffer a random divination miscast effect
    * 20%: Have you MP pool set to 0
    * 10%: Sets the remaining duration of all magic enchantments affecting you to 1 turn (2 turns for Levitation).

In addition, every time you cast a spell, there's a 2.5% chance that the failure rate will be increased by your remaining penance in % (in this case, there's only a 8% chance that your penance will actually be reduced by 1, unlike other punishments).

Do you think with the current status of my kobold that this kind of punishment is bearable ?
