I'd probably recommend keeping a great spiked club around for hydras; between TSO's halo +hit and his shield, you'd probably be able to survive long enough to kill th'buggers. I usually try to start pumping up maces wit' my trolls that get to unarmed 10 or so (Not that that happens very often ::)), just 'cause those clubs hit so bloody hard. Just avoiding them also works a'ight, if it's possible. Swiftness would help tremendously there, and it's probably low enough level a melee spec'd troll could manage to nab it, providing you can find a book. Starting off as crusader (or enchanter/AE/AM, maybe more) would help there :P

Does anyone have the numbers of exactly how much TSO's halo helps, though? It's was pretty noticeable with the minotaurs I was running offline (net was down majority of th'day, bleh) today. I'm guessing it's just a renamed corona (which would be somewhere between 2 and 9), but if the bonus is more that'd be wonderful...

Fun times in elven halls, I ran into Wayne in an open room with a bunch of elves around him, i saw an unexplored one tile hallway a bit away so i headed towards it, only to find a swarm of killer bees pouring out of it, preventing me from getting into the hall, by that time the elves had closed off my other route out. after 6 low hit point warnings (Wayne was chopping me with his frozen axe, with which he one shot blue death i summoned at the start of the fight) I finally cut the crap and spawned 4 greater servants in short order, 3 blue deaths and 1 balrog later I had this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I burned a lot of healing items, I think i'm going to wrap it up for tonight and take a break.

Blyxx man, congrats. Got th'orb! Your EV/SH scores are freaking insane when you've got agility and divine shield going. Crazy doom midget is crazy awesome.

Also woah. Nodghis aren't in the knowledge bot database, or on the wiki. Wonder what they are...

EDIT: And he's out! The champion's first win!

Rawr, thanks Frumple!   :D

Here's the dump:  http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Blyxx/morgue-Blyxx-20100805-062118.txt

Oh, and Nodhgis was a randomly generated Pandemonium Lord.  He was trying to stop me from getting out of the dungeon with the Orb.  But he couldn't catch me!

And just to make this post more interesting, I'm gonna tell the story of how I killed Cerebov.  I had a bone to pick with him because last time I saw him he was killing my best kenku ever.  I got luck in that I caught him sleeping and was able to back up and get properly prepared.  First I buffed myself up as normal:  Haste, Deflect Missiles, Flight, Swiftness.  Then I summoned 3 Angels with my remaining MP.  Then I drank a potion of magic and summoned 2 more Angels.  Then I hasted them all with a wand of hasting.  Then we charged!  I started off by drinking a potion of resistance and a potion of might, then started slinging until the angels got in my way.  As they kept Cerebov busy, I ran past him and took out a couple of balrogs and a pit fiend that were behind him.  I started to hit him with my sling again, but that drew his attention, so I apported his rune and used a blink scroll to get out of his LoS.  Then I ran around to the other side of the room and started pelting him with sling bullets again, only to find that he had managed to kill all my angels and put his full attention on me.  He summoned some fiends and I got rid of them with my rod of warding.  Finally, I drew my awesome holy quick blade (+13/+8...It started out as a +13/+0 gift from Okawaru) and with a handful of hits finished him off (to be fair, he was already "nearly dead" by the time I melee'ed him--but interestingly, Cerebov has so many hp that he goes into that state at about 100 hps!).  It was really satisfying for me to be able to take him out and avenge my Kenku.

My utter lack of notable resistances continues to stymie my poor wizard. Are there any branches that aren't a horrific deathtrap without resistances, barring the mines and the lair (Already hit bottom on both)? I really don't want to kamikaze the poor bugger...

If you've bottomed out orc and lair, I would expect you to be able to at least dip elf and shoals if its there. Might want do do a quick search for stores and make sure you aren't forgetting any though.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I suppose I could check the shoals... is electric eels the worst range threat before merfolk start popping up? Elf has multiple blaster-elves sitting right at the entrance, and their dakka makes it way, way too risky for my squishy wizard; I hit half health probably three times trying to lure something upstairs to slaughter. As for shops, I've fully explored everything I can, down to about D:17 and everything in Lair and Orc that doesn't require digging, and the only shop's been a single food store, which I bought out. This bugger's been having abs'lute crap luck for equipment, I guess. Decent book access though, or at least better than I normally have.

Thanks for th'advice, heh.

EDIT: Though checking the knowledge bot, the elves do seem to have pretty low hp scores... maybe I'll haste up and spam fireball a bit, pray they leave corpses to eat afterwards...

I am in a labyrinth, any tips? I am standing next to the metal wall but there is no clear entrance to the minotaur. Those annoying passages keep shifting.

20+ games as a minotaur and no labyrinth, now i am a demigod and I find 2 >:(.

In the final corner of the final vault of Vault 8, I finally found the silver rune of Zot! That brings the total to three and my tournament score over that of last year!

Here's the char dump. I just found that Katana from the vaults, finally something to hit demons with. I would really like a better axe and any artifact amulet though.

I have all the other necessities for Zot 5, except mutation resistance. Should I go look for that and apart from Elf, where? Also, I have no idea how I'll take down orbs of fire. Maybe learn some Ice spell?

I keep using the "Hug the wall" method (Just think that you have your hand on the left or right wall and then keep going without ever breaking contact), though I start improvising when I hit a lot of metal or stone walls. Has worked very well this far.

P.S. 59 stone giants killed, GRAAAH.

EDIT: Updated dump after Elf 7. Got some nice things. Especially this:
Code: [Select]
I - the amulet of Cekugob {Ward -TELE Hunger rElec rPois rN+ AC+1 EV+1}
(You found it on level 7 of the Elven Halls)
   [amulet of warding]
   It affects your AC (+1).
   It affects your evasion (+1).
   It insulates you from electricity.
   It protects you from poison.
It protects you from negative energy.
It prevents most forms of teleportation.
   It speeds your metabolism.

EDIT2: Oh wow, I was so wrapped up in my own game I didn't notice Blyxx's amazing win! Great job!

The hug-the-wall-method doesn't work that well when the maze keeps changing. It's useful, as long as you don't trust it too much. If you've found the metal wall, just try to find a way around to another entrance. And if you start straying too far from it, backtrack to see if the walls have shifted to open you a way. Keep doing this until you either find the minotaur or starve to death.

I've never gotten to a labyrinth in a game where I wasn't either a vampire or a spriggan, so I've never really had to worry about the hunger.

And LASD, that katana is just awesome. I'm not sure if I've ever seen any katana in this whole game. Too bad you're using axes. :(

I found a spellbook with Abjuration in it, and I think I'll memorize that too. I already have the decks of summoning with the crusade cards, and a rod of Demonology that can cast it, but one more source never hurts. I'll just forget it if I find some better spells.

@Antioch:  I do the same thing as LASD in labyrinths.  Some of them can be EXTREMELY non-intuitive though.  Sometimes you end up circling all the way around to the other side of the stone walls before you find a way inside.

@Frumple:  There are cyclops, centaurs, and manticores in shoals, and if you're unlucky you'll find an early aquamancer or javelineer type merfolk.  It's pretty well-equipped with ranged damage dealers.  I don't really know what you can do if you have NO resistances.  Have you IDed all the random shiny/glowing armours?  Poison resistance from a non-ideal armour type might be worth the trade-off if you can still kill stuff with the casting penalties.

Well, trying that out has netted me fire +1, from a ring mail, which'll definitely help eventually. I think, anyway, heh. Thanks.

My primary damage dealer, mystic blast, is still excellent, but my higher level stuff took a success hit, which is a little unnerving -- I've relied on telecontrol fairly heavily to take out a number of uniques. It plus blink's done wonders for my survivability. No poison though, yet. I do have some resistances (now, anyway) -- I've got a RNeg+ robe (and could take it to ++, but I'd lose needles or melee) and I've got corrosion via jewelery and resist mutation 1, via mutation. Access to stasis, if I needed it.

The cyclops/manticore/centaur thing might not be that bad, but it'd depend on cover. If I can get into mephy range, they're dead, but I don't have repel missiles or its upgrade, and fireball is my longest range spell that damages enough to take that caliber of critter -- and I can't use it outside of serious emergencies, due to hunger. Blast would get me killed on th'approach, bleh. I've killed a number of each of them already, but that was with corridors to block line of fire and suchlike...

I'm already in the mines, so I'm probably going try to fireball open the entrance to elf and see what that gets me. Honestly, I half want this guy to die so I can do a few TrAE runs, or give some solid hybrid combos a chance; my survival length with melee classes, offline, has skyrocketed over the last few days. It's almost annoying how much even single spells (swiftness+troll=own) increase the power of melee classes.
