Nope. The monster version is superior to the player version. His orb deals up to 136 damage, which is nearly as powerful as crystal spear. During my last 15-rune game he almost killed me with it.

Damn, that's scary.  I had a MDFi die to an orb of destruction just a bit before the start of the tournament (80 something dmg).

The best way to kill Boris is to haste yourself and spam Dispel Undead, which will kill him in 3-4 hits. If you kill Boris twice in a game you get a banner.  :) You may want to wait until your HP is higher, just in case he manages to launch an orb at you before dying. Do you have Revivification or Summon Butterflies?
I actually do have Revification. So, I guess if he hits me, I use that and keep shooting some more dispel at him. Would Makhleb's demons would be of any use or would they just get in the way?

I'm noticing that with Deep Dwarves getting to low health is really bad as it's a huge effort to get back up and it takes a lot of uses to heal to a point where you escape while a monster is hitting you (!Heal wounds and wands of healing seem to have surprisingly small effect with this guy). Then when you run away with 20 life, you'd need 3 or 4 powerful healing items to get back to full, so the best option seems to be to use one (to prevent the odd shooter from killing you by surprise) and then backtrack somewhere with manageable opponents and Vampiric Drain 'em until you've got your health back. I'm becoming slightly concerned that I'll run out of healing sources, though I can of course sacrifice my MP to charge the wands of healing.

EDIT: Well, now I have exactly 136 life. I'd be rather unlucky to get one-shotted, but I think I'll still visit the Elves first.

The noble elves of Rivendell can have quite a bit of loot, yes. I'm at the bottom right now, trying to wade through the horde of annihilators, demonologists and high priests in search of even more loot. Haven't seen quick blades yet, but there was the +3/+6 short sword of bread (slice rC++ Str+1).

I had some trouble reaching the end vault. The elves had dug a moat across 1-wide corridor, and there were sorceres and death mages on the other side. I ended up levitating over, casting a point-blanc mephitic cloud and spamming wands of draining. I was starting to think I'd never use those. :)

Was on early dungeon floor and found a room in which, completely surrounding an altar to Fedhas and a centaur, there was a wall of tree, so confident the centaur would not destroy the tree between him and my character in time before i was out of range, i just walked to the next corridor when i noticed half my life just disappeared.
Huh ?
...move back ... "You die."

Learned the lesson of today : trees do not prevent a centaur to fire arrow at you through them :D

centaurs are to crawl what crossbows where to Dwarf Fortress. A machine gun has a hard time keeping up with them.

Still not dead. Just cleared Elf 1-6 and killed Boris with a potion of speed and Dispel Undead, he only managed to hit me for 40 twice from point blank. Tomorrow I'll clear the Vaults up to 7 and then probably go snatch the Snake rune, if Mara lets me.

I apparently killed 14 more uniques today, wow.

Hope I can keep this up.

Go, Bay12 (and me)! Whoooo!

Boris isn't too bad if you keep your distance and sidestep the OoD's, especially if you're in a corridor or at least have some wall nearby.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Yes, that is a common problem. Do you have some specific cause of death that claims you every time, or are you just exploring the myriad pathways of doom this game offers?

Myself, I got some stuffing kicked out of me with those hellfire-happy elven high priests, but finally got them with some summoning decks. The elven hoard was pretty neat. No quick blades here, but I found a staff of energy, which means that as long as I can be arsed to take my shield off first, I can cast spells hungerless. Which pretty much removes the ONLY notable source of hunger for spriggans. Also, there was this randart amulet I haven't identified yet, but that apparently gives +6 to EV and +5 to Str and features a guardian spirit. I'm always open to more stat points and evasion, but I've never gotten the hang of guardian spirit. It seems to me that if I'm facing an enemy that can seriously hurt me, having it punch all my mana away is one of the worst things that can happen. I guess it's situational. For a melee fighter guy, this thing would be the best thing ever.

I also got my second and third books of Power. I bet what will happen now is that I will sacrifice these to Nemelex, and then somehow lose the last copy, just when I could use to learn some spell recorded in it.

So, Elf is conquered. I've never managed this before, either. Where to next? The last floor of Snake? I think my progress in Vaults was halted by Saint Roka. Or was that the main dungeon? I should start using the notes system. :P

*FRANTIC UPDATE*
I found a bazaar in the Vaults. Never seen one of those before. In an antique armour shop there, I found a randart dragon armour worth 3135 gold. I have 3527 gold, so I could afford it, if I was willing to blow most of my savings on it. Of course, I have no way of telling what it is before I buy it. Could be a cursed -27 dragon armour of "haha fuck you". Also, it would just about demolish my casting capabilities. That's not devastating, I have cards, but I've successfully played a diverse do-everything character up to now, and I'd feel sad about stopping.

Not too sad to use the armour if it turned out to be great, of course.

So, should I buy it? Am I likely to find more worthy causes to spend all my orc-mined money on?

If you can clear Elf and you have rPois, Snake shouldn't be too difficult. And if you have at least rF+, rC+, and hopefully rN+++, Vaults:8 should be doable and it's a cinch if you have rF+++ and rN+++. Just take it really slowly and do NOT randomly teleport

Were you the guy with Shoals? Yeah, don't do Shoals until after you finish off Vaults and even then only if you have rC++ at least and even THEN I would dive to D:27 first. Seriously, Shoals:5 is dangerous and there's not much reason to do Shoals:1-4 if you're not going to do Shoals:5.

go for it, you only live once and as long as there is not anything better to be had in the bazaar why not spend cash on some bling?

Okay, I'll take another shot at the lowest Snake floor. And then probably Vaults 1-7 and a few more dungeon levels. Hive's also a breeze with poison resistance, right? No Shoals, I already did Swamp and Slime sort of creeps me out.

It is.......

The +5 armour of the Dragon King {MR}. I am now incredibly resistant to hostile enchantments. And extremely unstealthy, despite my lithe spriggan build and 14 stealth skill. And my damage avoiding scores went from 14/48/16 to 27/12/16. Yeah, I could use some actual armour skill.

Still, could have been worse. Could have been lot worse. I think this is a fixed artifact, actually. I bet just having it with me will give a noticeable boost to my final score when I finally die or win (yeah, right).

Well if nothing else, it will make you a strong contender for the shop till you drop banner....you need to spend 5000 gold total to get it :D

And I have been having a really shitty day, two characters died in the lair again, with me managing to add only two more uniques to my tally... :( Just basically ran out of steam with both the characters as far as firepower is concerned, so I guess I am not too sad about losing them....the game was becoming a bit boring by that point..
Next up will be a simple old MDFi for me, or may be i will try a DsFi...Hmmm
