EDIT: Found 25 poisoned elven needles. Now I just need a blowgun! Racial bonus too.

Blowguns are awesome. I took down an orc warlord last night with curare-tipped needles (gifted by Trog, thanks Trog!) and javelins. I have needles of slowing and paralysis also - though the mulch rate is creeping up on me. Working on my melee so I can hopefully still survive when they run out. [Minotaur Warper of Trog, who needs spells anyway?]

They're just like the description in stone soup, bland as hell  :P

I sorta wonder what sultanas taste like. That and honey combs. I have one or two friends who ate actual honeycombs before and they said its utterly delicious, me wants to try D:

I wanna try a melee guy now, maybe a berserker, I'm tired of my super hybrid combat mages, never played a full melee character before. I also never tried one that relies mainly on ranged weapons for damage, is it feasible?

I think you would have to get pretty lucky to get enough strong ammo to go entirely with ranged weapon damage and not run out, but I do find that ranged weapons can really be powerful once you get their speed up.  Even in the late game, you can get a lot of damage in on strong enemies that can make them much easier to mop up in melee.

I didn't find a decent melee weapon until the Vaults in my current game (Nikola's sabre of electrocution, then shortly after a much better sabre of speed).  Before I found those, I was regularly using a sling in melee range against many enemies rather than draw my crappy sword.  Bracers of Archery early on from Okawaru helped me a lot too!

I especially recommend slings for a strong early game because it's so easy to get rocks for ammo, and later on the ability to use a shield without slowing your attack speed is great.  I have had some pretty good experiences with high elves and bows too, but they are MUCH harder to get through the early game due to arrow shortages and the fact that the regular bow that you start with is pretty weak compared to the longbows you'll switch to later on.

I have wanted for a long time to see a strong ogre with translocation magic and a bunch of enchanted large rocks.  I think it would be awesome to portal projectile those suckers!  Unfortunately, if you look at my ogre warper stats on CAO, you'll see I've never really managed to get one very far off the ground. :(

While we're on the subject of missile weapons, there's something I've wondered about but don't have any hard information on:  Does the "Might" status affect missile weapon damage?  My intuition says "Yes", but in my experience, I haven't seen a noticable difference in kill speed with or without Might when using missile weapons.  Anyone have hard facts about whether Might affects non-melee damage?

Not a-bloody-gain...

Can anyone recommend strategy for what to do when every down stair's exit is surrounded with things that will kill you? I keep running into this problem.

Latest, ferex, had that I-gobbo and sigmund sitting at two of th'stairs into D:2, and things I had to run upstairs to escape a few times on the last one. D:3 was fairly tame, but D:4's got ~5 orcs and a priest on one stairs, something vicious on the second, and going down the third had me run into a pack of literally a dozen jackels/gnolls, with a couple of ogres thrown in for good measure. Really, RNG? Really? I'm only level freaking four here!

I've been trying to draw some up stairs occasionally, waiting when I can to hope the numbers spread out a bit, but a good half-dozen morgue files says it's not working very well.

Getting ambushed when heading downstairs (and all staircases lead to it)  - Head back upstairs, read a teleport scroll, wait a turn, then head back downstairs.

All staircases leading to the next floor are guarded by monsters - Carefully lure a monster away from the group (throw rocks or zap them from afar) and kill it in a safe area. Repeat until everything is dead.

Edit:

While we're on the subject of missile weapons, there's something I've wondered about but don't have any hard information on:  Does the "Might" status affect missile weapon damage?  My intuition says "Yes", but in my experience, I haven't seen a noticable difference in kill speed with or without Might when using missile weapons.  Anyone have hard facts about whether Might affects non-melee damage?

+1d10 for melee only.

I'm playing a troll wizard.
I'm playing like he's a monk who happens to have the ability to shoot puffs of fire at people far away.

Currently having a very good run, as i am in Lair:7 with a level 11 Kobold Reaver following Fedhas (a first for me), with a 5 little wandering mushroom army.
I never followed Fedhas, i had no idea how very strong a wandering mushroom is, and how very easy it is to get one, they saved me a lot of time as there was no way my kobold would have survived some of the battles we had.

I was hoping to find Shoal to test the Sunshine power but sadly i found only Slime and Pit meaning a chance Shoal is not there (i have not found the Swamp either).
And obviously and convenientely i have neither poison or acid resistance, found nothing like this.
Should i get back to Orc Mine that i left alone for now or try to find Swamp/Shoal to see if i can get a rune ?
Or i am too low level for now ?

Fun thing, the entry to Lair was guarded by 3 elephants.
My character that had no big problems so far was unable to take any of them out, so i rushed to Lair, having a bit of advance on the elephants, transformed 3 plants, that were around the relative room i found, into oklob plants.
I often heard tales about how insane those oklob plants are, i never experienced this, as i never tried to approach any of them since i play that game :D

I went upstair to find the 3 elephant surrounding it, then went back down, the 3 elephants following.
And let's say that the elephants were not amused, the oklob plants made a carnage (though it took several shots).
At least those now dead elephants served very well their purpose, as they allowed me to start my powerfull wandering mushroom army that helped to clean a lot of Lair.
I have not yet gone into the new Lair:8 as it is said to be insane difficulty down there.

Lair:8 vaults range from "Look, some hounds and wolves!" to "Have some hellephants!", so at least check it out to see if you've gotten one of the easier endings.

There are three stairs in Lair. One goes to Slime (guranteed stairs), and then the other two go to Swamp, Shoals, or Snake with equal chance. You must of missed one of the stairs on the way up.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

If you manage to get bongjor's horrible revification or whatever, early on with a necromancer, there's nothing short of powerful spellcasting uniques that will have a chance against you. Abominations are rather easy to create and a mob of them is stupidly powerful. Plus they can follow you through stairs and never ever turn hostile.

I took back my DrWz combo high! I got that demon book that you have to be so good at summoning to read and learned the demonic horde spell from it. For 6 mana you get more then enough imps to take out 6-headed hydras with it.

edit:
Oh and dinah whoever they are went and played all the rest of the combos in a I start it then quit it sorta way. Basically you can take many of the scores just by actually playing the combo but whatever.

How much damage do Ice Statues do? I've only ever met them long enough to Sticky Flame in the past, so I wouldn't know. If their shots do as much damage as Oklobs, I'll be ok, but if they do much more, I'll just wait. There's no rush.

I'd probably suggest waiting, I think. I haven't ran into them in crawl, but in Zot Def they're pretty much a direct upgrade over oklobs, only they summon ice beasts too. Nasty critters when there's a lot of 'em. I'd imagine they'd do less direct damage via beam than oklob if you've got cold res, though.

Zot Defense ice statues summon a lot more often than regular Crawl ice statues do. Then again, everything shoots more often in Zot Defense than in regular Crawl, so maybe that's just an extension of acting more often?

Probably. Anyway, mucked around the spoiler stuff for a second; turns out if I've got the numbers right, the oklob can hit for a bit harder than the statue's bolt spell, so you'll probably be alright, if the cloud and summons don't get'cha.

Numbers below :P
