I think I'll join the Immigrants.

CAO Name: Humaan

I have reached the Temple twice.

EDIT: Also, I might want to become captain, because SOMEONE has to do it.

Your wish has come true. Welcome to the Immigrants, as no less than the Captain!

At this speed, 30 players will be playing under the Bay12 flag. I like it, and it's sure to intimidate the opposition.

I've been doing abyssmal on server play, but in independent play I've reached the Temple once or twice.

There's always a spot available on the Bay12_Miners team , and probably 2 if Baruk has disappeared.

So if you feel you have intermediate experience with Crawl, feel free to request membership.
And once done,

Login to CAO
Press 1, then press o
At the very top, type in
# TEAMCAPTAIN Robsoie
Press esc, and save it.
to appear in the team listing on CAO

If you have no idea on how to login to CAO, follow this link
http://crawl.akrasiac.org/docs/ssh_guide.txt

Net Tiles appears to be compatible with the current 0.7.0 (though some strange tiles will be used sometime as long as Net Tiles is not updated), it has Putty integrated from the Crawl menu itself, it simplify a lot the login procedure.

So what happens if my peeps never show up? Will immigrants of appropriate levels be pushed into the soapers?

Sure, but let's not worry about that until the 31th or so as the players don't start mattering until that. And all scores you get before you join a clan will carry over, so we'll be juust fine.

Only summoner I've tried is that sif mummy one, which probably breaks them early on, when channel energy can completely recoup a spell's cost. Once you've got a critical mass of bodies, things become a lot easier, and it's not impossible to get 15-20 critters up when you can immediately recharge your mana after summoning. Keeping a company of 6 or so around you at all times is downright easy, which negates considerable amount of the threat in (the early parts, at least) Crawl. That warlord I killed probably took out 20-30 imps (maybe more~) before it died :P

For pretty much any other race (Barring maybe vampires, but their bloodless state has a lot of disadvantages), the hunger cost of doing that would be completely exorbitant; there's no way they could absorb the cost, and no way a level-equivalent combo would have hunger down to nothing. Even without massive spamming, it was generally taking more castings of an equivalent level summoning spell to kill something than a conjuration spell would have taken. A lot safer, but comparably more expensive. And a frugal summoner is... considerably harder to play.

I mostly only play summoners. The secret is to not actually be a summoner but be a wizard that takes the summoning book because you start with a higher intelligences and more mana that way. It may restrict you to having only the spammels and the canines but canines can easily clear our the orc mines.
