Every time a SpEn wins, Xom eats a kitten. This tourney has seen at least 14 consumed kittens :( Well, probably considerably more (128 wins so far!), but still. Lotta' underaged roof rabbit, dere.

Congrats, though! Every win is awesome, heh.

Congratulations for the win, i'm amazed at how much wins there are in this tournament after "only" 11 days.
A question, what is best all around, Bolt of Fire or Fireball ?
Both spells seems to cost the same thing in term of magic and food, and in the wiki on Bolt of Fire has its damage explained, Fireball only mention the 3x3 zone of effect at impact, no idea what kind of damage it does.

Sticky Flame is incredibly usefull, saved my kobold fire elementalist numerous time (especially when i ran into 3 centaurs.

Personal experience suggests fireball hits about as hard as mystic blast, maybe a bit harder. AoE spells, like fireball, are entirely superior to a non-AoE spell that's equal in terms of statistics, for many reasons -- not the least of which is being able to shoot around corners without having LoS on a target. I slaughtered pretty much the entire elf:7 vault hurling fireballs from outside the elves sight, ferex, but that was a fairly specific scenario. I still get plenty of initial attacks on wandering, etc, creatures, from around corners and suchlike, so while it's a specific scenario, it comes up pretty often.

Fireball's also more mana efficient, generally, when dealing with two or more creatures that can be hit by it. Then, instead of being (6 mana for X damage), it's 6 mana for X damage * number effective; basically, th'amount you're getting out of your resource expenditure multiplies in relation to the number of targets it can hit. Same for the bolt, now that I check, but a line's often even more rare than a bunched up group, in crawl.

All that being said, Bolt of Fire, iirc, has higher single-target damage potential. If you've already got a decent single target spell (Mystic blast is probably better, ferex, if only due to accuracy and armor-piercing), fireball is clearly the better choice. If you don't, Bolt of Fire is probably the better choice. Another thing with fireball, though, is that if you memorize it, you can catch Delayed Fireball (which is basically a single shot, on demand perfect casting of Fireball -- a panic button, basically) for only a single spell level (Of course, if you learn th'Delayed version, you get base Fireball free anyway).

My wizard's been getting away with using Mystic blast for most things, and fireball whenever I can hit two or more targets. It's about as efficient, mana wise, as I've been able to manage so far.

Actually... check here. If I'm reading it correctly, fireball actually has higher damage potential for single target shots, at least a few versions ago. Bolt of Fire could (potentially) do more damage in a single casting if you got a lot of critters lined up in a row, but that's even more rare a situation than getting 2 or more bunched up.

So! Ultimate question is if you're trying to keep stealth going. Fireball is noisy and both wakes stuff up and can lure things from offscreen, which can be dangerous. I'd certainly still go with fireball though, personally. It's an iconic spell :P

Thanks for the hints and the links.
I will try to go to Fireball, for the potential of hitting more than 1 enemy, i hope Sif Muna will give me some good books to learn that mystic blast, as i need some non-elemental conjuration spell to avoid getting a dangerous situation when facing monsters resistant to fire or other element.

I'm currently very happy of this little kobold fire elementalist,
It was very hard to keep alive on the 1st few dungeon floors, but once it got a good spell power and sticky flame castable without too much miscast, his survivability increased a lot, even managed to add 2 more uniques in my kill list (Erica and Urug), and found some interesting items, a dagger of venom with some good hit/damage bonus i took on the body of a kobold that was burned to death by my spells, and even found a little artifact robe that protect me from poison (at the cost of 1 intelligence point unfortunately).

My little Kobold Fire elementalist is always alive !

Though it was difficult, as at some point i was on Dungeon:12 and fell through a shaft.
I landed on Dungeon:15

My expedition to get back to a level more appropriate to my kobold current level was rather dangerous, lucky me the Kobold has some stealth skill, as he avoided to wake up a hydra and several ugly things on his way up.
A fire drake on another level was not sleeping, and i believe my little kobold survived only thanks to a few blink scrolls to get out of his range and find fortunately an upstair, but this one was very close as the fire drake hit my character with fire 2 times hard.

Fortunately he managed to get back.

Once exploring regularly, i met the Hydra again, but this time i was prepared and with a little luck and a lot of sticky flames and lots of shots from a disintegration wand, i managed to kill it.

Sif Muna has begun to give me books, unfortunately the 1st one (Sif Muna's Papyrus of Attacks) is rather useless.

Now i have found a book shop, and i am wondering what to do, one of the book in there can make me learn iron shot.
Apparently would be perfect for those fire resistant monsters, though i have no idea how great my character would be at using this spell, as my fireball despite my Level 7 Spellcasting, Level 11 Conjurations and Level 12 Fire Magic sometime miscast when i need it to NOT miscast.
Iron Shot requiring Conjuration and Earth levels may miscast even more.

Robsoie, you should probably work on getting your spellcasting a lot higher. I would turn off all your other skills (even other magic schools) and focus on spellcasting alone. You need it to be able to cast those high level spells without hungering.

Sif Muna will tend to give you books in the area that you have been practicing lately. So if you want, say, a Translocations book, you can pick a small spell in that school and practice it for a while. Soon you should receive more translocations books.

Good work on getting this far! Sounds like you are doing great.

Ok, will turn everything off to get more spellcasting, i have not done Lair (did not found yet the entrance) or Mines , so i got plenty of locations to train spellcasting fortunately without wasting too much food as orcs are great in sandwhiches.
Great that i have my ring of sustenance, it has been helpfull too.

Usually when i'm doing great, there's always a very stupid death soon, it has been true so far for every characters i leveled above 10 in this tournament so i will not be surprised :D

Finally some good fortune! I am a level 7 mountain dwarf fighter, and I've found a wand shop. I need some advice as to what I should get. I already have a wand of paralysis, and I have 301 gold to splurge. I also have some recharge scrolls.
Here's what the shop is selling:

a - a wand of paralysis (11)                                  112 gold
b - a wand of frost (11)                                       84 gold
c - a wand of paralysis (4)                                    98 gold
d - a wand of flame (16)                                       91 gold
e - a wand of slowing (5)                                      70 gold
f - a wand of fire (9)                                        216 gold
g - a wand of digging (9)                                     108 gold
h - a wand of random effects (6)                               45 gold
i - a wand of teleportation (10)                              275 gold
j - a wand of cold (6)                                        204 gold
k - a wand of slowing (9)                                      75 gold
l - a wand of lightning (12)                                  199 gold
m - a wand of draining (6)                                    178 gold
n - a wand of disintegration (6)                              163 gold
o - a wand of digging (7)                                     104 gold

Suggestions as to what I should buy?

It's nice to see you doing well.  :) Don't bother buying spell books. Books are expensive and Sif will eventually give you all the books you need. You won't be able to cast Iron Shot reliably any time soon. Learn Stone Arrow when you get it and use it to train earth magic. Turn off fire magic once you can cast Bolt of Fire/Fireball reliably.

Suggestions as to what I should buy?

Wand of teleportation or a wand of disintegration and digging.

I will have to train in Earth then and will keep my money with the hope to find something great in a shop.

Managed to go from spellcasting 7 to spellcasting 8, nearly 9 by nearly cleaning Orc Mines.
Nearly because at some point of Orcs Mine:4 i saw a sleeping Erolcha in the center of a huge room without any kind of cover.

Remembering this, and not wanting to count on my "luck" to see if mephitic clouds would confuse her or not depending on some random number, i prefered to avoid the battle.

But i'm happy as Sonja the usual bane of my hand-to-hand characters due to her being nearly untouchable has been utterly burned by a single sticky flame, as she has surprisingly few health points.
I took her dagger of distorsion, maybe this will help once i will encounter monsters immune to my execellent dagger of venom that has such nice +,+ bonuses.

Took down Jozef too, but death was very close there, as to escape him as my health was going down a lot quicker than his own despite the repeated sticky flames on him, i used a teleportation scroll that pulled me into a big room with 2 orcs priests, 2 orcs wizard and 1 orc sorcerer that summoned lots of demons immediately, i was very lucky the orc priests smitting did few damages on me, usually they are a threat for my kobold if left alive for too long.

Had to use 2 more teleportation scrolls as the 1st one teleported me nearly in the same place (my luck strike again). Once out of insane danger, and after a few heal wound potion, stabbed and burned Jozef to death.
Then i pulled those Orcs priests, wizards and sorcerer one by one and burned them all.

No wonder my kobold title is arsonist, the little guy seems to be some kind of fire maniac :)

Be aware that it's risky to wield a distortion weapon, because unwielding it has a fair chance of sending you to the Abyss.

Thanks for telling me that, having never used such weapon i'll now look up the wiki to see what kind of other side effect i am risking there.
Now i'll make sure that if i decide to wield it that i will never remove it, bad memory of Abyss bad, very bad ;).
