H'lo, there!

Sure do. The "No seeds" message is a deceptive, overly-complicated way of saying, "THERE'S NO MUD HERE!" Really, what it says is there are no seeds that exist that can be planted on anything but mud; in the new version all farming requires irrigation. This is fairly simple. I posted this in another thread just minutes ago, but I'll gladly replicate it here:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's a visual of the standard farming process.
You'll want a river or a brook that occupies two z-levels (really one, but it shows up on two): the surface, and a level underground--they all do.
Dig out your farm on the underground level of the river, only a few tiles away from it before digging out a small tunnel toward it (without breaking through and having it flood all over).
Seal your farm room with a door or two from the rest of the fortress to prevent the water that will enter it from escaping out into the tunnel beyond.
Make three mechanisms.
Use one to build a lever outside the farm room.
Make a floodgate.
Build the floodgate at the end of the tunnel leading to the river, next to the wall tile that separates the tunnel from the water on the other side.
Use the other two mechanisms to connect this floodgate to the lever.
Pull the lever, opening the floodgate, exposing the wall tile.
Have your miner break through it to breach the river. He or she will high-tail it out of there and the room will proceed to flood. I recommend waiting until the water inundates approximately half of the room before pulling the lever again to seal the leak with the floodgate (though perhaps a little earlier since dwarves seldom get around to pulling a lever quickly enough).
The water will eventually evaporate and you'll have nice, farm-able mud! :3

then again if it is above-ground, that means you just have no above-ground seeds

thats when to

d>p to gather plants

Oh, right, seeds. Duh, my dwarves need to eat the plant first, don't they.

Or you can brew. When you brew the seeds get saved.  By the way I explained things a bit more in depth in my post on the below linked thread. What you really need to know is that above water fill level of 2 water wont evaporate off underground. So, if you use the above suggestion you really need to pay close attention to how much water is flooding in and how long it will take to shut off the lever, or you may overfill then it kinda sucks cause you end up getting mud in places you dont really want to when you open the door to let out the excess water.

Setting up an irrigation is incredibly quick and easy once you get the hang of it. A simple lever connected to a door (which opens/closes instantly compared to the 100-steps delayed floodgate) only takes a minute to set up, and can be used several times if you need to expand your farms.

Sorry for the bump/ almost necro, but this is easier than starting a new topic..

I forgot to bring a mechanic. Am I screwed or is there a way to salvage this? (I need a mechanic to build the mechanics workshop to get levers etc)

just go into any dwarf (i usually double up mason/mechanic or my architect leader) and assign him the mechanic labor.

i think 'v' then 'p', 'l'abor, then down arrow to engineering, hit enter, down arrow to mechanics, hit enter

Gah, another question.

I have everything set up, with the floodgate and lever connected and the river wall designated for mining, but noone is going to mine it.
I mined out a little room to test, and the two miners came over and dug it out.
I tried pulling the lever back to the original position, but still nothing happened...

EDIT: Figured it out. The Mechanic was asleep and din't connect them up. My bad

Bronzebeard that was a great explanation. It was very easy to understand what you were suggesting. Thanks man.
