Monopoly
« on: July 17, 2010, 12:32:25 am »

I am venting here even though it sounds a LOT like showing off.

I was playing Monopoly for a while and I realised that against my friends and family I have managed to rack up 5 straight wins (which isn't too unusual) and it makes me realise that people really don't know how to play the game. I know that I am often super lucky (though my Younger Sister has the luck of the heavens... and I only beat her knowing how to play)

Here are my playing tips:
1) The ONLY time exchanging a location for money is worth it is if you have a monopoly you can make houses on... Period! Honestly the number of times I've seen people trade locations for 500
--It gets worse... Most people NEVER alter the prices for locations in response for the amount of cash the person has or the price for landing on a property. if the person has 10,000 and gives you 500 for a property consider yourself ripped off...
---I am open to there being exceptions, but I've rarely seen it work out for the person unless they happened to get extremely lucky.
2) Generally speaking you trade a Monopoly for another monopoly... Not cash.
3) The Railroads are deceptively great monopoly locations. Sure they are only worth 200 but they are 4 locations, many chance/Chest cards make you land on them (often paying double) and they are spread across the board so there is always a chance someone lands on them.
-The 4th win against three players (All who had a monopoly at one time) was one while I only had 4 railroads.
4) RARELY should you ever consider not buying a property. Since you can always morgage property.
-Personally I think there is a secret to intentionally not buying places... It could be a way to intentionally drain the opponent's coffer.
5) Don't make bad deals with inexperienced players... Honestly it isn't fun watching someone win only because everyone else plays badly. (My brother does that... He traded another player what he needed for a monopoly... for a little cash...)

What are you Monopoly playing tips? I know I am not a very good player but honestly the basic "Don't give away property"

My opinion? Don't play monopoly hardcore. It's a casual game, so everyone you play with will just end up not wanting to play anymore. Ignorance is bliss.

my number one monopoly playing tip: put everything back in the box and play a better game, like an ouija board.

I hate monopoly and other board games like that, its all about rolling dice and moving your guy, boooorrring (though monopoly isn't nearly as bad as some other games). Tabletop wargames are so much better (and SO much more expensive  :'().

Every game in existance is like this. From chess to warcraft, if you take it seriously (as many do) and your opponant doesnt, its boring.

I took chess seriously, my gf finds it boring now ;)

In chocolate monopoly just buy all the houses and eat them. If there are no houses available to buy your opponents are kind of screwed. In normal monopoly you actually have to use the houses but same theory applies. Also I remember a monopoly game I played with a friend when we were both very young. We kept giving each other IOUs as payment when we should have been bankrupted and lost the game. It was only after the game kept on going for about a month we realised why it wasn't ending.

You can still eat them.

Candyland. There is absolutely no player input.

This topic makes no mention of auctions. Obviously, nobody here has actually played Monopoly by the rules.

Note: whether you play by the rules or not, it's still a boring game with little to no choices.

Monopoly was the bees' knees while I was growing up.

...I think I suffered from the same "no real competition" though.  :/

Monopoly is for babies. Play Agricola or Puerto Rico or something instead.

I do auctions but generally you don't want a property to go to auction with a few exceptions existing.

It isn't so much that I am against casual play so much that it sort of breaks the game when no one can at least competently play.

It would be like playing Poker where everyone other then you checks.

I don't know how to play Monopoly.
The dice don't make much difference if the players are actually playing. Aside from the first two and last two turns, 90% of the money flow is player-driven.

Player-driven by how you rolled the dice in the first two rounds, yeah.
