I don't know how to play Monopoly.

The dice don't make much difference if the players are actually playing. Aside from the first two and last two turns, 90% of the money flow is player-driven.

FYI I'm not american and I haven't played original Monopoly. Just most popular ripoff in my country Eurobusiness http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/42050/eurobusiness .  It was all about your luck in few first rounds around board. If you were lucky and managed to achieve more monopolies than your opponents you won the game. Sometimes it was enough to just get most expensive one right behind start line, build it up and be lucky enough to have people land on it and pay gazillions. No real strategy in there other than "do not sell properties opponents need for monopoly since they will build few houses and screw you over next time you land there" as you can't really chose what you want to buy, its all determined by roll of dice. That's why board games like that fail. In wargames dice rolls determine a lot but since most of the time you roll it a lot you can expect consistent results (with a chance for surprise to keep game interesting) and in the end its all about your strategy not how you roll dice.

Monopoly is a great game. It's very trade based, but then, most of it is luck based too. If you're making 5 straight wins, you're up against some really horrible competition. My 5-year-old sis can win easily just by buying every property, then buying houses everywhere. If they're actually buying land for cheap, then they definitely don't know how to play

You can trade a location for cash... but demand a LOT of it. Ideally, enough to build a few houses, because that's what you really need cash for. People are willing to pay big bucks for monopolies, take advantage of it.

If you're trying to pick a location to mortgage/sell/buy houses.. remember that the dice rolls are least likely to land on 2 and 12 and most likely to land on 6-8. This makes a big difference when mid-late game when you have 3 locations to buy a house, but not sure where your opponents are more likely to land on.

Unless your dice in not very well balanced chances of rolling any combination of numbers should be equal (or am I missing something here?). BTW if demanding as much cash as its possible for properties you want to sell is pinnacle of strategy in monopoly then yeah ... I'll pass. There are better games out there.

Yes. 12 and 2 are each only possible with one type of roll (6,6 and 1,1) whereas 7, for example, can be accomplished with lots of dice rolls (1,6 2,5 3,4).

7 is at the peak of the bell curve, which means it is actually quite likely that the people going after the first person will be paying him rent.
