Nobody's ever in the chat.

Any I started (unsuccessfully) fooling with the tilegen... but I did find this. Can anyone make heads or tails of it? Scrapped feature, or still usable somehow?

Personally I'm expecting them to try and make a profit out of this by selling extra items and maps etc. I'm guessing that's tied into it.

I prefer the flamer, as you know :D as a support weapon its great. Good for clearing out eggs and infested facehugger things, also needed for some objectives and does decent damage.
The only real problem is its a spread weapon so you gotta be careful not to flame your own people. Too much.

As I hear, and recall. The flamer is actually a precision laser. (Can't remember if it was someone in this thread who said that or not) The noisy visual effects don't do damage, there's actually a thin stream of particles going straight where you point doing the damage.
LIES. At the worst it's a large laser.

It might be that they're trying to draw more people into steam trough this game and thereby up the revenues on other games, so I don't know if we're going to see content with a price tag for this game.

Also damage amplifiers are awesome and so are K80's.

The damage amplifiers are horrible if your trying to run away. Also I hate facehuggers.

I'll bet you money that they won't.

It's not a big mystery why they did this. Valve releases quality free game, BUT only on Steam. The distribution platform they own. People not already on Steam, of which there are millions, will get Steam to get quality free game. Now Steam has a bigger userbase, and the newcomers will potentially stay on and buy other games. It's advertising plain and simple, except in this case, the advertisement is a quality free game.

It's no different than Old Spice investing money into their latest series of ads. Heck, I bet the budget allotment was no different too.

As to why they chose this game? That's another simple answer. Alien Swarm is already free. As a mod. In fact, as I hear tell, it's actually BETTER with more stuff on the mod. Just not as pretty. The amount of profit they would have made trying to market this game (admit it, you wouldn't have cared as much if it wasn't free) is insignificant compared to the publicity gained from this stunt.

You know who are the people I don't understand at all? The ones who want to pay real money for this free game. What is wrong with those people? Do they attempt to pay their grandparents when they get presents? Are they rolling in money or something that they want to throw it at things? Give it to charity, geez. Hell, give it to me!

True, but there are some parts where you just need to make a stand. Plus, mines come in large packs, so it'd be rare for you to need more then one guy with mines around.

I didn't realize how many mines it drops. Pretty impressive and useful stuff actually.

Well that only works if you've got the explosives skill. Then again, one character has explosive 5, for a total of 5 frggin mines per toss. Add in the fact that you get a load of charges on your mine pack and you can actually hold out quite a bit.

Well, okay... Insane is hard. I know, obvious statement - but still! It's freakin' brutal!

Oh, and I thought I'd mention: According to the Steam Stats, Alien Swarm is currently the most-played game on Steam, with over 45k active players and a peak usage of 60k. Sure, it's only been available for ~24 hours, but that's still one heck of an accomplishment.

For what it's worth, lots of people donate to Toady. If it weren't for that attitude there would be no Dwarf Fortress.

completed hard was alot of fun. Done first level of insane. going continue later in day need some sleep. Telsa gun way overpowered. pretty much infinite ammo, good damage to swarms, jumps to other enemies, perfect against parasites, never wastes ammo, shoots through doors, and im not sure but looks like it semi stuns? and 100% accuracy  ;). It just fail against the big creatures (althought it semi good against the armoured bug as it puts it into defence mode which stops it attacking so your friends can get behind it)so i have bunch of grenades on me just for that.

It appears Valve is looking into fixing the crashes I'm experiencing.

Good people, Valve.

Telsa gun won't save you on Insane difficulty. Doesn't do enough damage.

Anyway, here's some console tips:
Quote
For those of you with camera shaking problems, enable the console and type in "asw_camera_shake 0" without the quotations. It will disable all camera shaking.

For those of you with a hard time keeping track of reloading, type in "asw_fast_reload_under_marine 1" to get a fast reload bar thing under your marine.

You can also type in "asw_auto_reload 0" to disable auto reload if you are up to it.

More information can be found at the Alien Swarm wiki: http://alienswarm.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Swarm_Wiki

Useful info:
- The autogun, on its own, has the same damage per second as the basic assault rifle.
- Health kits run on a timer. So stand inside. You don't "use up" healing by being inside.
- If your teammate is infected, shoot him with a tesla gun to halve the infection rate.
- Leadership gives bonuses to health and damage to all squad members nearby
- Blinking next to enemies stuns them. It's not faster than running, however.
