The game comes bundled with an in game random campaign generator which you can, theoretically, share with your friends without sending them any files. I'll quote from the manual:
Quote
1.  Make sure you have Alien Swarm and the Alien Swarm SDK installed on Steam. You can find the Alien Swarm SDK in Steam under the "Library - Tools" section.
2. Load up Alien Swarm.
3. Open the developer console by pressing the tilde (~) key. You may need to go into Options -> Keyboard/Mouse and tick "Enable Developer console" for this to work.
4. At the console type: sv_cheats 1
5. At the console type: asw_tilegen

I tried it out and it definitely works. Making random maps and playing it takes less than 3 minutes. Haven't been able to play successfully with anyone else though and just one marine versus the entire swarm is really, really, really hard.

I'm a good heavy weapons guy. Has anyone used the blinkpack?

Edit:Autogun is good against everything.Even facehuggers.

When I play offline practice, even hard difficulty, I'm having a much easier time, because I don't have to pay as much attention to friendly fire as I do in online mode. I know FF damage is very low, but still.

It's pretty easy to pick a hallway the swarm is coming from and just lay down some suppression fire (works especially well with heavy weapons guy, of course). The AI moves out of the way and covers different directions. People sometimes dont work that well together.

This gets me to think: If you hold the walk key, but dont move, you crouch. But IIRC people cannot shoot over your head.
So, basically, we need two things: REAL ducking and a walk(duck) toggle.

Well my offline experience was fun, we were basicaly fucked from the start. (insane difficulty)
First we came across a PDA, something about containment, everything was fine until the ambush, we lost the special weapons guy.
By this time we were running as fast as possible and welding doors behind us.
A few moments later we came across the outside and I rushed to hack a computer (I play as a tech but the AI won't do it anyway so w/e)
after this the door broke that we came through so we ran again, through a hallway and welded another door by this time we lost the officer of the group so it was just me, a nearly dead tech and the half dead medic, we welded a door and quickly patched up and restocked ammo then proceeded to rush the lift.
The horrors, we were both on near termination and had no ammo when we walked off the lift but made it out alive.

Tl;dr The AI doesn't stay close enough to you for a squad and I would really like it if they stayed closer because then I don't have to run so far to come back and weld a door.
Other than that I love the game a lot.

Making random maps and playing it takes less than 3 minutes.
It only takes you 3 minutes to load the mission after it gens it? Takes around 10 for me.  :(

I prefer the flamer, as you know :D as a support weapon its great. Good for clearing out eggs and infested facehugger things, also needed for some objectives and does decent damage.
The only real problem is its a spread weapon so you gotta be careful not to flame your own people. Too much.

As I hear, and recall. The flamer is actually a precision laser. (Can't remember if it was someone in this thread who said that or not) The noisy visual effects don't do damage, there's actually a thin stream of particles going straight where you point doing the damage.

I've got this downloaded but it's laggy as hell for me on some parts, so I'm currently trying to beat my PC back into a usefull shape (that'll hopefully reduce the lag I get at TF2 as well) Once I've got that done I'll probably join in on DFC events.

What the hell is going on with this? I've been trying to download for like 4 hours today, not counting the time last night, and it's stuck with 3 MBs left to download. It also refuses to change its status from "Suspended".

Servers are busy so Steam's having trouble downloading, and Steam has always had issues with starting a download back up if it gets interrupted.

Yeah I know people have had a lot of success when they change the location they're downloading from (I heard Ukraine and maybe Australia were good?) but if it's suspended I dunno... you may end up having more success if you delete what you have and restart if it lets you do that. I don't actually know what Steam will let you do.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.
