New Alien Swarm on Steam Monday 7/19

Apparently Black Cat games got hired by Valve to develop a free version of Alien Swarm on the source engine which will be available this coming Monday!  Who else is going to play it?!

So, it's basically a fun version of L4D with aliens instead of zombies? =p

Except top down and with no versus and 40 weapons and classes and a easyish to use map maker and open source, so yeah L4D with aliens. :D

Looks good, especially for a free game! However, judging from the videos, there doesn't appear to be a large variety of aliens. They seem to be trying to make up for this by adding a whole bunch of weapons. =P

Judging by the minimum requirements on its Steam page, I'll be playing with close to the bare minimum! I really need a new comp. At least a new graphics card. System requirements for easy viewing:

Quote from: System Requirements
Minimum:
OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
Processor: Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better
Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

Recommended:
OS: Windows® 7 / Vista / Vista64 / XP
Processor: Intel core 2 duo 2.4GHz
Memory: 1 GB for XP / 2GB for Vista
Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with Shader model 3.0. NVidia 7600, ATI X1600 or better
Hard Drive: At least 2.5 GB of free space
Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

[PPE:] I wouldn't say it's fun yet, Soulwynd. We haven't even played it. And I enjoy L4D.

Also. Possibly main difference between this and L4D: this is 3rd person top-view. This is also class-based, so like a mix of TF2 and L4D and some open source top-down display game. Judging by the videos, the music doesn't sound as impressive as the music from the L4D games, which was very atmospheric. But then again, I didn't hear any music in the gameplay video, just guns and what I assume are the aliens' death cries. I really hope it's not like that in-game.

Similarities I can see so far between this and L4D:
4 player co-op
Shooting hordes of enemies
Choice of weaponry, though this has a lot more (not necessarily a good thing; if not done right, they can make the game feel cluttered)

Differences:
Top-down instead of 1st person
Aliens, not zombies
Class-based
No announced other modes other than Campaign-style; especially no Versus
Possibly no in-game music

[PPE2:] Damn you, Hugehead! Beat me to it.

ROCK.

I was so sad when I realized that Black Cat was probably defunct.  No updates, no news, website abandoned, no forum activity except "big planz soon".

But no!  Running silent in the Valve fleet, for two years.  And now they surface and launch the nuke!

Source code even.  Probably not art assets, but still worthy of respect.

Thanks so much for this thread! Loved AS on UT2004, and I was wondering what the hell happened to these guys. Looks like they were just bought by Valve, the rascals!

I was trying to be funny, since I don't like L4D, but that's what it looked like, a fun L4D.

I hope I get to play with you folks.

L4D isn't about killing zombies it's about killing sick people.  I always find it funny when people try to counter the Autralian government's actions in regard to L4D 2 by saying it's a zombie game when the game is so specific about calling them "Infected" and not zombies.  I mean, there are so many legitimate defenses they could mount for the game, but they have to choose the one that isn't true.

Also, for all you people saying it's like L4D... It's like Alien Swarm, the mod for UT2004 it's based on.

Pft, infected are just another type of zombie.

And comparing it to itself (in another engine) is silly. It does seem like L4D in the sense you're fighting swarms of enemies and a few special strong ones now and then.

The original at least was a lot tougher than L4D.  L4D is all about bludgeoning your way through an endless horde of toilet paper enemies with the occasional tough fight.  Alien Swarm was about tactical movement and covering each other to make sure you didn't get surrounded and slaughtered.  Also, if one of your guys went down they actually went down, and you could fail a mission by letting a crucial team member die.  Need to open a door?  You damn well better have a live tech with you.  You also had to worry about ammo.  I don't know how this game is going to be though.  It does look a lot more L4Dlike.

Doors are complex devices that require multiple years of training to operate here as well?

If they're electronically locked and designed to withstand large explosions, yes.
