I want to learn to do something.
« on: July 16, 2010, 09:03:50 pm »

I want to learn to do something. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could try to learn to do? Lets be serious please, this is a serious question. It can be anything though, as long as it does not take like a year to learn.

Learn to juggle, or play hacky sack. Fun activities that I indulge in all the time, cause I won a hacky sack in a raffle.

Hacky sack is a fun pastime, and in the right demographic you can get to know people better with it. Sudokus are actually fun once you get the hang of it. What are your money constraints?

I'd suggest a musical instrument, if you can cough up the money for one.

Learn Latin. It`s fun and interesting.

(Yes, takes longer than a year to learn but so do many of the other suggestions here.)

You could also learn braille, in case that you become blind. Or learn to fight with a staff, or another awesome weapon.

I'd recommend an instrument or a language.

Learn to drive a car. That way, everyone will come to you for a ride.
Just be careful of speed bumps. (<-NSFW)

Learn to program and make fun ascii games for all of us!

(I am myself a proficient C++ user, but I'm lazy as hell so I find it hard to work up motivation to get stuff done. Any tips?)

If it's summer in your hemisphere, learn how to sail.  It's fairly cheap, fun, relaxing, physical without being strenuous, and a dashing way to spend time with girls.

Design and build a trebuchet.

Make a list of foods you like, both familiar and exotic, and then learn how to cook them.

Go camping.  You're from the UK, right?  If you're anywhere near Wales, the Pembrokeshire Coast has some phenomenal camping/hiking.

Brew your own beer.  (never tried this one but I'd like to sometime)

Start a vegetable garden.

Learn Latin. It`s fun and interesting.

(Yes, takes longer than a year to learn but so do many of the other suggestions here.)

Speaking as someone who took ~6 years of Latin and minored in it, the first year (intro grammar, etc) is extremely dry, and a person who gets bored easily (such as our OP, I'm guessing) stands no chance of getting through it without a crusty old Latin teacher scaring them into shape.

Oh yes, brewing your own alcohol and even distilling it is also very funny, easy and rewarding. Nothing tastes as good as just distilled alcohol. I think that`s the only good thing i`ve ever learned in my chemistry class.

In the US at least, I think the law is that you're allowed to sell up to 100 gallons of home-brewed beer before you have to pay duties for it. Or was it 1000? I'm not really sure, but you can still make a nice profit from it.

For the alcohol guys, keep in mind that the OP's profile says he is 12.
