Yeah, I've heard of the Golden Sun games. I think a couple of my friends were obsessing over it for a while :P

LOTR: Conquest, which a friend just bought earlier today. Fucking awesome. :)
Starwars: Battlefront 2 is another kickass game.
Also, +1 on Golden Sun.

I wn't say its plot wasn't cliche-ridden, but it was there and it was enjoyable.

God knows it wasn't the graphics or the enemy AI that kept my interest.

Buck Rogers:Countdown to Doomsday

it was one of the SSI classic rpgs(all of which were pretty damn good imho).

It's on Home of the Underdogs if you are interested in a look.

The truly best of the best:

Baldur's gate series

Age of wonders series

Escape Velocity:Nova

I've played lots of games in my time. Mostly PC games, since my console history has been very poor. Lots of them I've enjoyed very much. Lots of them, I enjoyed even more than the games listed above. However, none of them are as good as the above, even if I enjoyed playing them more.

Most games have a lifecycle: I'll play the game for a while, then I'll stop once I'm done, and eventually uninstall it when I need more space on my computer. However, months later, the games listed above will seperate themselves from the rest. My mind will wander, and it'll think about all the games I've played. It doesn't dwell on the ones that have the best graphics, or the ones that have the most features, or even the ones that I enjoyed the most. Instead, it will end up dwelling on one of the games listed above. As time passes, it'll feature slowly more and more in my mind - I'll get a new idea for a character I want to play, a playstyle I want to give a go. No other games do this to me. Eventually, I'll find my old CDs, reinstall, and start playing again. That is what makes these games the best.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is the game I've put the most hours into, by far. With friends, of course.

For single player(ish), Demon's Souls is really fun.

I've only played the demo of Recettear so far, but I can already tell it'll take a place in this (rather short) list.

Warcraft III.

OK. The graphics were OK. The Campaign was OK at best. The unit choice left a little to be desired...

But two things stood out.

The multiplayer was amazing. I have been playing it for years.

And the customizability. You can make practically anything custom. its amazing. The visuals on those hand-made (computerized) maps trumps out World of Warcraft easily (regrettably, wow is easy to beat).  But if you've played SotdRP (a sect of WIII), you know what I mean.

Also along the lines of Pirates from Microprose was another gem called Covert Action by Sid Meyer. It wasn't perfect but it was a spy thriller with cool mini games like code breaking, planting bugs, car pursuit and combat in buildings. Considering that it came out in 1991(?) it was a huge feat if overly ambitious.

Yeah, I enjoyed Covert Action. Sid Meier considers it one of his biggest lessons of what not to do, though, so we will never see a remake like we did with Pirates!.
